What is MTSS?
Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is an evidence-based framework that uses data-based problem-solving to align and implement school-based tiered instruction for academic, mental health, behavioral and social supports for all students.
The integrated instruction, supports, and intervention are delivered to students in varying intensities (multiple tiers) based on student need and across environments. “Need-driven” decision-making seeks to ensure that school resources reach the appropriate students at the appropriate levels to accelerate the performance of all students to achieve and/or exceed proficiency.
Who serves on the MTSS team? The weekly meeting team consists of school personnel who are well versed in the multidisciplinary needs of the whole child, including academic, special needs, medical, behavioral, personal, social and emotional:
Administrator
School Psychologist
School Counselor
General Education teacher
Department / grade level representatives
Special Education teacher
ML Support
Student Support (Social Worker, Student Concern Specialist, Paraprofessionals, School Nurse, etc.)
These representatives are a suggestion, and not all members may be available for each week (some representation may be through spreadsheets or other alternatives based on schedules). Every team will vary based on learning community, student needs, schedules and resources.
How does my role as a teacher impact MTSS? Teachers are vital to the success of MTSS. Multi-tiered systems of support only work if the changes are being made across all levels of the school building. Teachers provide data and information that the MTSS team uses to guide needs-based decisions, alert team members to potential concerns or challenges, on both the larger scale along with concerns for individual students. Data examined in MTSS is used during PLCs to support positive change, trends are identified and plans are put into place, and concerns for individual students are involved in problem solving, and potential movement through the tiers of support for MTSS.

Best practices for creating MTSS Student Intervention Plans:
Begin with Data-Based Problem Solving. It is so important that data is collected on the student concern, attempted interventions, student strengths, student motivating factors, etc. are all considered. Teachers should come prepared with data and history of the student to best support creating a plan that will be successful.
Developing a plan: most MTSS student intervention plans start with core teachers. Including stakeholders as a part of the intervention development stage helps in identifying areas of concern, SMART goals, supports, progress monitoring, etc. and increases buy in and fidelity of intervention implementation
MTSS Fidelity Check should be reviewed consistently after developing a plan. This insures that we are providing evidence based interventions, there are qualified interventionists, time built into the schedule to make sure students are receiving interventions etc. Adjustments can be made after interventions begin in order to make sure we are meeting the fidelity checklist!
