Tech Theatre

Intro to Tech Theatre


Intro to Tech Theatre is the most diverse tech theatre subject because it incorporates every technical discipline. You will explore various technical aspects of the Tech Theatre CTE pathway including an introduction to theatre safety, scenic construction and painting, theatrical lighting and sound, costuming, stage make-up and production procedures.

Stagecraft


Stagecraft is intended to help students develop experience and skill in one or more aspects of theatrical production, but concentrate on introductory stagecraft (safety, tools, set construction, rigging, stage painting, special effects, etc.). More advanced theatre courses will concentrate on improving technique, expanding students’ exposure to different types of theatrical techniques and traditions and increasing their chances of participating in public productions.

Theatre Technology


Theatre Technology is intended to help students develop experience and skill in one or more aspects of theatrical production, but concentrate on introductory theatre technology crafts (such as lighting, sound, projections, and so on). More advanced courses will concentrate on improving technique, expanding students’ exposure to different types of theatrical techniques and traditions and increasing their chances of participating in public productions.

Textile Crafts


Textile Crafts is intended to help students develop experience and skills in one or more aspects of theatrical production, but will concentrate on introductory costuming (including fabrics, patterning, basic sewing skills, fashion history, costuming accessories, and prop making crafts). Students will learn how to use a sewing machine, puppet masking, mask making, and using papier-mache and sculpting to make props in this class. More advanced courses will concentrate on improving techniques, expanding students' exposure to difference types of theatrical techniques and traditions and increasing their chances of participating in public productions.

Stage Makeup


Stage Makeup is intended to help students develop skills and experience in basic stage makeup, old age makeup, specialty makeup and design.

Theatre Design


Building on skills learned in Stage Craft, Theatre Technology, and Textile Crafts, Theatre Design will learn and apply stagecraft, theatre management, and other technical theatre skills by designing and building the set, helping with theatre marketing, designing and coordinating the costumes, props, special effects, sound, and lights for a theoretical production. Theatre design will include stage design history, fashion history and research components.

Directing & Theatre Management


Theatrical Production and Management courses prepare individuals to control and direct the planning, design, preparation, and production of theatrical performances. Course content may include instruction in stage management, theatrical design, program management, dramatic production, rehearsal management, personnel management and casting, actor coaching, directing concepts and techniques, theater history, scene work, script interpretation, business management, organizing the box office, marketing, public relations, and communication skills. Students will begin to participate in producing of concerts, events and productions scheduled in the auditorium and around the school. This course may also provide a discussion of career opportunities in the theatre. This class may include outside class time rehearsal and performance time.

Production Workshop - Production


Introduces basic theatrical techniques at a mastery level. Develops text analysis and performance skills. Develops beginning level awareness of the physical and vocal skills required of a stage performer beyond high school. Includes reading and analyzing plays to develop acting skills, playwriting, and performance. Students are expected to participate/perform in the Spring Production as an actor, designer, and /or technician.

Capstone Experience


Students apply the facets of theatre production from choosing a season to dramaturgy, advanced staging and characterization to stage management, design to technical work until performance. Students are required to participate in an assigned production team role and to participate in the creation of and completion of an Apple Box Children's Theatre production, sponsored by WOU Humanities Department. They will apply learned skills in producing, directing, technical theatre techniques, marketing and teaching theatre skills to young theatre students (grades 4-8). Students are expected to participate in the production process from beginning to end. The Apple Box Theatre performances will be scheduled at the end of June.

Acting Fundamentals


Building from foundation basics learned in Intro to Theatre or World Theatre, Acting Fundamentals includes any of the following: character development through short and long form improvisation, scene study, theatre history, introduction to classics and contemporary plays with analysis, non-contact stage combat, voice and diction, blocking and staging, and careers in the performing arts.

Intro to Theatre


Intro to Theatre will introduce you to the world of the performing arts. You will explore pantomime, movement, voice, acting, character development, improvisation, theatre history, scene study, and script analysis.

World Theatre


World Theatre is an introductory course that will acquaint students with the origins and evolution of non-Western theatre and the performance art of Asia, Africa, and Latin American. Students will be introduced to elements of theatre, dance/drama, masks, and music within different cultural environments. Students will be involved in devising, researching, creating and performing projects that reflect the influences and styles of performance worldwide. World Theatre introduces basic story telling tools within the theatre world - voice, body language, script, movement, etc. This course will expect students to participate in a performance and requires some outside class time rehearsal and performance time.

Acting Fundamentals

Advanced Acting*


Building on skills learned in Intro to Theatre, World Theatre or Acting Fundamentals, Advanced Acting sharpens acting skills through a study of theatre history, acting Shakespeare, acting methods, dialect, Laban and movement, devised theatre, and competition and auditions pieces. Studies would also include musical theatre. Students are expected to participate in outside class competitions.

Course content may include instruction in stage management, theatrical design, program management, dramatic production, rehearsal management, personnel management and casting, actor coaching, directing concepts and techniques, theater history, scene work, script interpretation, business management, organizing the box office, marketing, public relations, and communication skills. Students will begin to participate in producing of concerts, events and productions scheduled in the auditorium and around the school. This course may also provide a discussion of career opportunities in the theatre. This class may include outside class time rehearsal and performance time.

Production Workshop - Acting


Students apply the facets of theatre production from playwriting to dramaturgy, advanced staging and characterization to stage management, design to technical work until performance. Students are required to participate in a one-act play festival and student show case. They will apply learned skills in acting, dialectical, directing, technical theatre techniques, advanced monologue and scene analysis, and study theatre history. Students are expected to participate in a variety of acting competitions and auditions outside of class.

Students are required to participate in an assigned production team role and to participate in the creation of and completion of an Apple Box Children's Theatre production, sponsored by WOU Humanities Department. They will apply learned skills in producing, directing, technical theatre techniques, marketing and teaching theatre skills to young theatre students (grades 4-8).
