In this typography quote project, I wanted to accomplish 3 key things. Firstly, I wanted to be able to intrigue the viewer of the piece, have them pick apart the quote and how it fits in with the image. Secondly, I wanted to have the viewer of the piece to be able to at least understand or even relate to the quote’s meaning. And thirdly, I wanted to choose a quote that I could personally agree with to make it feel more personal.
The brainstorming process of this piece started with me going through tens of quotes to find which one would suit what I wanted to do the most. I would soon find 2 quotes that intrigued me, but after giving it some thought and doing rough sketches for both of them, I decided to choose the one that I could work with better. Over time, I would make multiple adjustments to the formatting of the image by keeping a nice balance of the text, the main image, and white space, adjusting the size and positioning of the quote’s text, and refining the girl’s face and hair.
With the typography, I wanted to choose a font that would fit in with the mood of the piece, while making the quote legible. I wanted to have a nice balance between the quote and the image, not having the image block out the quote.
One of the things that I like about this piece is the way the girl’s face turned out. The expression on her face seems to convey a feeling of melancholy to me. I also like how the hair flows and progressively darkens in value, which seems to correlate further with the meaning of the quote used. I do think that I could’ve changed parts of the hair to make it look more natural, like splitting it into more parts, etc. If I were to start this over, I would’ve changed the overall look of the hair, and maybe some of the formatting of the quote when it’s against the image.
