Zoey Tiefenthaler “Beauty Has Its Thorns”
12x18,” Chalk and Colored Pencil on Paper, 2019
The style of my drawing is a mix of abstract and surrealism. The symbolism of my drawing showcases the beauty of something like roses, and how it can spread in an almost terrifying way (i.e. the thorns). The skeleton in the drawing shouts the phrase “Eureka!” anonymous to the sharp, piercing thorns wrapped around them. For things that I would change, I would have added more body to the skeleton by drawing the ribcage and the arms, posing them in a way that could’ve helped emphasize the skeleton’s expression. I also feel that I could’ve added more roses or rosebuds on the thorns themselves to further strengthen the idea of interpreting beauty in a fearful way. For things that I love about the drawing, I love the boldness and color of the drawings with the mix of charcoal pencil to help shade them. I also love the skeleton’s happy expression and how simple yet complex the drawing turned out.
