Emma Zimmerman “Twisted handle Cookie jar”
6X6X10 In. Earthenware clay and glass, 2018
The style of my sculpture is realism and abstract. It is realistic because it is a cookie jar but it is abstract because it does not look like your typical cookie jar. I got the idea for this cookie jar by sketching. I sketched many ideas and saw many examples and created my own from there. Adding the coils around the edges was a last-minute detail and not planned. If I were to start over I would try to get more glaze down in the cracks by the coils. I overall really love the colors and how it turned out with the coils.
Emma Zimmerman "Plates and Mug"
3X3, 5X5, 7X7 In. Plates, 4X3 In. Mug, Earthenware clay and glass, 2018
The style of my sculpture is realism and is usable. I got the idea for this from looking at other clay sculptures online and putting my own spin on it. I started out by cutting squares of different sizes and forming them over foam balls. I then pressed a flower stencil into them and set them out to dry. After they were fired I decided to glaze them black and coloring the flowers and laves in, I wanted to do this so that the flowers stood out. If I were to start over I would try to make more mugs so it looks more like compete set. I overall love how the black and colors turned out, I think I achieved my goal of making the flowers stand out.
Emma Zimmerman " Wire Jewelry"
Wire and beads, 2018
My idea for this wire jewelry came from the internet and jewelry stores. I love wearing rings and wanted to make one of my own and found numerous flower ring ideas online. To make this I made a circle out wire and then made loops for the flower petals. For the bracelet I had a long strand of wire and then looped it back around so that it would be able to connect and close. I originally was going to leave it plain wire but then decided to add beads to give it color. If I were to start over I would maybe add a bead to the middle of the ring or try to add color to it in a different way. I overall love how they both turned out and how they both look simple.
Emma Zimmerman “Birds and mug”
4x3x3 & 3x3x3 In. Earthenware clay and glass, 2018
The style of my sculpture is a mix of realism and surreal. One of my birds is realistic looking while the other is more abstract, but both are abstract in color. My mug is also realism and resembles many other mugs like it. To create these molds, we first had to make slip from clay and water, we then poured the slip into our molds and let it sit. The molds then were fired, glazed and fired again. If I were to start over I would make sure that the slip was smoother and not so chunky so that the molds came out more clean looking. I overall love my abstract bird because it is different and not exactly like the other bird I created.
Emma Zimmerman "Clay bowl"
6.5X7X2.5 In. Earthenware clay and glass, 2018
This bowl was created to be donated with the rest of the bowls from my class. To make it I had a mold of a bowl and placed my clay over it to get the shape. To put the clay on the bowl I had to run the clay through the slab roller and spray the mold with cooking spray. After that I left it sit out to try, it was then fired and I glazed it peach. If i were to start over I would try to make the edges look softer and cleaner. I do love the color and the shape the bowl had.
