Emma Zimmerman “Sydney With Feathers”
12X18, acrylic on paper, 2018
This is a painting of my young cousin Sydney holding peacock feathers. I was wanting to try another project with painting faces and lots of detail so I decided to choose this picture and paint it. To me this work symbolizes the joys of being young and having fun with random things you find, even feathers. If I were to start over I would try to add more detail to the houses in the background with more shading and lines to make it more recognizable. However, I love the detail in the feathers with all the colors and the use of real feathers on the border. I also really like how the shading and highlights on the face turned out and the rosiness of her cheeks.
Emma Zimmerman “Christmas in Chicago”
18X24, acrylic on paper, 2018
This is a painting of a picture my mom took in Chicago during winter. I liked the architecture and buildings so I decided to challenge myself with painting it. This painting displays peace and symbolizes the holiday season. The picture was originally just of the buildings and flag but I decided to add in the snow and holiday decorations to make it more interesting to look at and make it easier to tell it was winter. If I were to start over I would try to fix or add more detail to the architecture on the right side because it was a little more sculptural. Although, I love how it overall turned out and I’m glad I added the red and green decorations.
Emma Zimmerman “Snow in New York”
11X14
This is a painting of snow on a cold day in New York, I painted this based on a picture my dad took from his hotel window while away for work. I thought the colors of the sky, water, grass and plants were all very different and I wanted to challenge myself with recreating them. If I were to start over, I would try to make the snow on the plants and grass look more realistic. I Struggled from beginning to end with the snow and got to a point where I was ok with how it looked. Overall, I really like the illusion of space and depth that I gave my paining. I also think I accomplished my goal of recreating the earthy colors I wanted to.
Emma Zimmerman "Tree Ring Prints"
11X, acrylic on paper, 2018
These are prints of tree rings that were brought into our class. As an assignment we were told to pick a tree ring and make a print of it. For my print I used black paint and wanted to print it on white paper rather than color for a sophisticated look. I also wanted to use black and white so that the print would be easy to turn into another project. If I were to start over I would maybe print some on colored paper just so I had some variety. Overall I love how the prints turned out and how I have one with thicker lines and one with thinner lines.
Emma Zimmerman "Blooming in the night"
11X, Watercolor on paper, 2018
I got the idea for this one night on a drive home from DesMoine. It was getting late and the sky was a dark blue with stars shinning bright. I decided to combine this idea with a sunflower because of the contract between the dark sky and bright flower. If I were to start over I would sketch my idea out more and try to blend my sky a little more. I overall love the contrast of the bright flower and dark sky and I like how it reminds me of that night when the sky was so dark and so calm.
Emma Zimmerman "Self portrait" *IN PROGRESS
9X11, Graphite on paper, 2018
I wanted to try a self portrait for my art portfolio because this is something I have never done before. The picture I chose to draw was one of my senior pictures. To draw this I started out with drawing the face and the hair, after that I went back in to add detail and my clothing. I plan on smoothing out the lines more and making my clothes darker. So far I love how the hair looks and I plan to add more lines and waves to make it even better.
