Emma Zimmerman “Plastic Pollution”

18X24, Acrylic on paper, 2019

I got this idea from a picture I had taken in North Carolina. All over in the streets there are these white signs on the ground that say, “NO DUMPING, DRAINS TO OCEAN.” This sign was something we don’t see in the mid-west so I took a picture of it. Now years later after learning about ocean pollution, this picture has more meaning. This is a topic I have grown to be concerned about so I thought I could bring more attention to it with my painting. From the original picture I added water, plastic objects and finishing net to the painting. If I were to start over I would try to make the trash look even more realistic with more detail. I overall love how simple and ghostly the trash looks, I also like how I used bright colors for the trash because it draws your eyes to it.

Concentration

The central idea of my concentration is to represent different social and environmental issues. In my concentration, I was able to capture and display environmental issues like deforestation, pollution and the importance of bees. Social issues represented include shelter animals and big vs small businesses.

The idea for my concentration began with my ocean pollution painting. Pollution and environmental issues were something I grew to be concerned about, so I decided to try and draw attention to these issues through my art. While trying to capture and represent various social issues I was able to experiment with moving subjects and still subjects. While exploring the various environmental problems, I took an interest in social ones as well. The idea to dive deeper into these issues came about when traveling through Nashville, TN and seeing all the big company buildings. The central idea to represent social and environmental issues through photography, printmaking, and painting was something I wanted to capture and represent for people to see in different places and in many different ways.

Quality

Many images were taken into consideration when choosing my quality. I took my best photographs and chose from eight of them, from there I narrowed it down to five. I chose these five based on the composition, colors and seasons they were taken in. I think I was able to achieve a good mix of seasons and scenery. I also think each picture has different lines and places that draw your eyes in keeping it interesting. If I were to redo my quality, I might try cropping some of the images differently to showcase some of the main focus points. I overall love the variety of images I have and how the composition of each is different.

Breadth

For my breadth I chose images that show a variety of materials and skills. Out of these images I displayed my use of acrylic paint, graphite and photography along with creating objects, people and landscapes. Of these, the most difficult things to create were people. Lines and shapes in the faces make it difficult to create them as realistically as I would like to. Capturing photos is also difficult at times when trying to capture an exact moment or line things up the way you would like. If I were to redo my breadth I would try to add more of a variety of materials like colored pencil or chalk drawings. I overall love how each work is different and the variety from the works I already had.
