Welcome back! I hope this month's newsletter finds you all rested and ready for the new decade.
Exams are only a week away on January 15th-17th. Below you will find information about the schedule and each day's details. Continuing the new tradition, CHS will again provide a hot breakfast for all students each day of exams. We hope this effort gets our students off to a great start. As we head into next week, we ask that our families reiterate with our students that exams are a small part of their educational careers and lives. No single exam dictates their future or defines who they are. If they have been engaged and put in effort towards preparation, then they are ready and will have success. At this point, sleep and a healthy approach will have the greatest impact on their week.
A reminder that the Bulldog Brainstorming Session - Setting Parent Priorities with the Principal is coming in February. We would like to get a save-the-date out for this great event! Monday, February 24th from 6:30-8:00pm, The PTO will hold a parent input session on setting CHS priorities for the future work of the CHS administration and staff. More information and a sign-up will be shared in the coming weeks! This event largely influences the goals and changes that occur in the high school over the next year. The night begins with an overview of the requests and priorities from last year's parents who attended the event, and how we as a school have responded to the requests. We will then discuss what continued growth and efforts the parents would like to see from our staff and administrative team.
As I shared in communications during December, our staff is extremely proud of our students' maturity and engagement in our ALiCE safety training. Below you will find a summary of student input on the week. Feedback from our students was insightful and positive. We will continue to respond and grow throughout the year and beyond. A HUGE Thank You the the Cedarburg Police Department for their support during the week. Capt. McNerney, Det. Fitting, and Officer Budzler were integral in the planning and implementation of the training, and additional officers were on site during the week to support and were willing to help in any way. Much appreciation.
Cheers to an amazing 2020 for our Cedarburg High School and our CHS families.
Go Bulldogs!

The statewide ACT testing day for Juniors this year is March 3rd. Students interested in preparing for the ACT should visit the CHS Counseling website. Various test prep opportunities such as Method Test Prep, ZAPS, Knowledge Edge, North Shore Tutoring, WI Test Prep, Kaplan, etc. can be found on our College Entrance Test Preparation link: https://www.cedarburg.k12.wi.us/schools/high/counseling/TestPrepResources.cfm
In general, juniors are encouraged to take the ACT in the spring of their junior year. Taking an official ACT on an earlier test date such as Feb 8th can be helpful practice. As noted, all juniors will take the required state ACT on Tuesday, March 3rd at CHS, with registration occurring in advisory. Through a variety of methods, students are highly encouraged to practice and prepare for the ACT on a regular basis. ACT research shows that 57% of students who retake the ACT improve their scores.
All 9th, 10th and 11th grade students have free access to a helpful ACT test prep program called Method Test Prep. MTP is an online program that helps students build their English, math, reading, science and general ACT test prep skills. By clicking the “Clever Login Portal” link from the Students Tab on our website, students will have quick, automatic access to their MTP account (no username or password is required).
MTP keeps track of practice work that is completed and identifies students' strengths and weaknesses. Students can listen to subject tutorials and lessons are followed by a quiz to assess mastery. Students have access to a large pool of practice questions and receive instant, easy-to-understand explanations upon completion of each question. MTP also includes a helpful vocabulary builder. Students have seen measurable progress with an average increase of 3 points on the ACT when using MTP. Thanks for encouraging your child to take advantage of this free and effective ACT test prep program. Contact your counselor with any questions about Method Test Prep.
Each year our staff prepares skill support sessions to offer our students during resource. These learning sessions correlate directly to student data we receive from the ACT and ACT Aspire. Students are free to sign up and attend any of these sessions to help them prepare for the upcoming ACT test. CHS ACT Resource Support Session Calendar
December's CHS Safety Training was a powerful and positive week for our students and staff. Our hope is that our students feel educated on their options and empowered to act if a situation should ever arise. Below you will see a snapshot of the feedback from our students on the week's activities and lessons. Comments were also collected from our students on what they still need in order to improve their understanding and comfort. We also engaged with our class officers to get detailed and anecdotal feedback. Our staff will review and work toward our continuous safety improvements as the year progresses. Please feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions on our safety training with our students. Thanks again to all of our families for having the conversations at home and helping our students process their emotions and learning from the week.
For the third year at CHS, sophomores will have the opportunity to begin postsecondary exploration while Juniors are taking the statewide ACT on March 3rd. Sophomore students will have the opportunity to travel off campus and explore a variety of postsecondary options. We began the rollout of this process on Friday, January 3rd during a sophomore class advisory meeting. Please see the attached powerpoint presentation for an overview of what was discussed with sophomores. Additional information will be sent to parents in the upcoming weeks as we will be asking you to assist students in making the appropriate postsecondary visit selection.
Please see the attached document for a great opportunity for your son or daughter to be a part of the Cedarburg Education Foundation as a Student Ambassador.
The College & Career Center transforms into the Career Cafe on Tuesday mornings during Resource! We offer cookies and warm beverages, dim the lights and showcase a career presentation from the Wisconsin Students and Leaders Network.
November was dedicated to Culinary careers - we watched ‘It’s Hot In Here! Life as a Professional Chef,’ ‘From Farmer to Chef, Exploring Culinary Careers’ and were excited to host a current student already training to be a pastry chef at a Cedarburg restaurant! December was focused on Business careers.
All students are welcome to sign up in Mrs. Myczek’s Enriching Students. These are the tentative upcoming themes:
- January - Health Careers
- February - STEM
- March - Information Technology
- April - Education
- May - Art
Each week’s showcased career is featured in the daily announcements and displayed around school. Career presentation videos can also be viewed in the College & Career center upon request.

Screenagers: NEXT CHAPTER
January 23, 2020 6:30 PM | Cedarburg Performing Arts Center
Intended Audience: Parents, Caregivers & Students (5th-12th)
The showing of Screenagers: NEXT CHAPTER is a follow-up to Screenagers: Growing Up in a Digital Age shown last fall by the PES Steering Committee. In this documentary, filmmaker and physician Dr. Delaney Ruston takes the conversation around screens and teens to the next level with Screenagers NEXT CHAPTER: Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience—a film that examines the science behind teen’s emotional challenges, the interplay of social media, and most importantly, what can be done in our schools and homes to help them build crucial skills to navigate stress, anxiety, and depression in our digital age. The film sets the stage to understand these challenges in our current screen-filled society, and how we, as parents and educators, can empower teens to overcome mental health challenges and build emotional agility, communication savvy, and stress resilience.
The one hour video presentation will be followed by a 30-minute talk back panel discussion with experts in the field and other educational professionals.
The video is appropriate for school-age children 5th -12th grade, and they are welcome to attend. This event is open to all community members. Free child care will be available and is provided by CHS National Honor Society students.
An additional sign up for childcare is needed and located at the bottom of the form.
