October's virtue is "Hope"
I hope everyone has a wonderful Fall break! It will be a short and exciting week as we gear up for the pep rally and football game against Fatima! This week and next week we will be on Week 4 of 5 weeks of our 1st period of sight words. We will not introduce a new group of words next week since this week and next are both short weeks. The Rapid Reading chart sent home Monday will last through next week; keep it in the folders and work on it when you can, spending at least four nights reviewing the words by next Friday. Please use this extra time to continue reviewing all the sight words on flash cards that you can make with index cards. This will be important as we move toward report card testing, which will come in November. You can make reviewing sight words fun; go outside and have them write the words with sidewalk chalk, or draw the words in a pan of pudding or colored sugar, write the words in shaving cream on the bathtub walls! Mastery of letter sounds and letter knowledge is crucial at this point so they will be able to recognize them when sounding out words. Once this is mastered, sight words will be more easily mastered too! This will help them tremendously on their baseline reading assessment.
We will send home one easy beginning reader book this week due to the short week. Please keep it stored in the individual bag, keep it in the folder through Wednesday, and return it on Friday morning. Remember, the title is only recorded one time and signed indicating that it has been practiced. Concentrate on reading the words the first night, then on the second night have them read and talk about what they are reading with you; try to hide the pictures the third night and see if they can read it without the clues of the pictures! Please commend them to help them build their confidence. Thank you so much for your help!
P.S. In case there is any confusion about the reading tips paper ( "Ways to take action" ) I sent home a couple of weeks ago with the pictures of animals on it, please know it was just for reference of things I use with them in class. They are just tips for you and your child to help them when reading. Nothing to be worried about! I just wanted to share things the students may hear in class to help them become better readers, and give you ideas of ways to help them sound out and read for success!!
The following link will take you to a site that has cards with sight words that have action based clues embedded in the words, and gives tips for movements and actions that may help the student remember the words.
If your child is still having trouble identifying letters and/or letter sounds, use this link to practice daily:
Our students have been asked to enter a flag coloring contest for the Veterans (VFW).
If you do not want your child's flag to be entered in the contest,
please let me know by this Wednesday.
