Dear Parents,

The students are doing great with identifying the sight words introduced in class! If you see that there are words they are struggling with at the end of the week, after reviewing them on their Rapid Reading Grid every night, or they still have sounds of letters they are struggling with, please add these words to the bottom of the new Rapid Reading chart on Mondays. If they are having trouble remembering several words, please place them on flashcards, and continue reviewing them every night. You don't want them to get behind on their sight words! They are tested weekly on the words we are focusing on from the week, along with the words that have already been introduced.
We would also like to remind you to look over their classwork that is sent home on Wednesdays. This is a great time for you to assess your child's individual needs and give them that one-on-one reinforcement they may need! This work will come home stapled on the “leave at home” side of the folder for you to keep.

Assessments are stamped “sign and return” and are placed in the “return to school” side of the folders on Tuesdays or Thursdays (if we have ones to send that week). This is so they will not be confused with the work that you keep at home on Wednesdays. Please look over the assessments when they are sent home, and document what needs to be reinforced. Sign the top sheet and make sure to return them to school. Use these assessments to gauge what they need extra work on at home. Thank you for all your help and support.
Keep using the "Word Detective" checklist for students to use when reading stories to you at home. Get in the habit of asking them questions about what they are reading! Have them give you details or make predictions. We will send home very easy books next week. Keep reading nursery rhymes with them at night and ask them about it afterwards. This a great way to build comprehension skills, review rhyming words, and prepare them for reading books! Thank you, in advance, for all the help I know you will be giving your child.

We will be learning about apples and Johnny Appleseed in honor of his birthday. Please send your child's favorite type of apple to school this week
for sorting and comparing activities.

Please send a stuffed animal to school on Friday with your child. We will be having a "mock pet blessing" in honor of St. Francis' feast day, which is on October 4th.

Our class will be participating in a fun Fall Fest morning October 9th. If you would like to join us or volunteer to help run a game station, please let me know!
Pumpkin Patch field trip is on October 26th from 9:30-11:30.

When you are shopping in the next couple of weeks, if you see pie sized pumpkins starting to be put out in the fruit and vegetable section, we will need each child to bring their own. Pie-sized are small-medium pumpkins; not the mini size. We will be using these in class for sizing activities and to decorate when we are introducing letter "Pp". Please try to have these in by next Monday.
