*Expository Text: Gives facts, examples, and explanations about a topic; may include text features such as headings, real photographs with captions, diagrams, labels, and maps; Uses certain text structures to organize information such as description, chronological order, or cause and effect


*Headings: A heading tells what the section is about.


*Bold Print: Bold print shows important words that are in the section.


*Author’s Purpose: An author’s purpose for writing an expository text is often to inform. Some authors use cause and effects to explain how events are connected. A cause is an event or action that makes something happen. An effect is what happens. 


*Reread: When you come across words, facts, or explanations that you do not understand, you can reread.


*Sentence Clues: As you read, you can figure out the meaning of a word that you don’t know by looking at the words and sentences near for clues.
