VALENTINE'S DAY: We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Friday, February 9 because it falls during the Mardi Gras break. Students are allowed to bring treats to share with the class. We have 25 students.

MAD MINUTE: For the 3rd 9 weeks, we switch to subtraction. Students will be expected to get 12 subtraction problems correct in one minute. As always, simply encourage your child to do his or her best!

Unit 3, Week 5
*Expository Text:
Gives facts, examples, and explanations about a topic
Organizes information in ways that make it easy for readers to understand (Ex. Showing causes and effects or by putting events in time order)
May include text features such as photos and captions
*Idioms:
A group of words that have a special meaning
*Central Idea and Relevant Details:
Central idea is the most important point an author makes about a topic
Relevant details tell about and support the central idea.
Thinking about what all of the details have in common will help you to find the central idea.
*Prefix:
A word part at the beginning of a word which changes the word’s meaning
A prefix re means “again” (Ex. reread means to read again)
A prefix dis means “opposite of” (Ex, disagree means the opposite of agree)
A prefix un means “not” (Ex. unlock means not locked)
*Diagrams/Labels:
A diagram is a graphic feature used in expository texts. Authors use diagrams to show special parts of something or to explain how something works
Labels show you specific parts of a diagram

The Verb HAVE
The verb have has two forms in the present tense.
Use has when the subject is singular.
Our class has a weather station.
When the subject is plural or I or you, use the form have.
The past tense of have is had.
Use had with a singular or plural subject.
