What immunizations are required for Dental Students?
Hepatitis B vaccines: 3 doses + titer required or positive Hepatitis B
All FIRST YEAR DENTAL STUDENTS are required by the Dental School to have completed the Hepatitis B Vaccine Immunization Series PRIOR to contact with patients which occurs in the first semester of enrollment. The Hepatitis B Immunization is a series of 3 doses of the vaccine. The entire series takes about 7 months to complete, so if you have not started it yet, you must do so as soon as possible! The second dose is usually administered 1 month after the 1st dose. The third dose is usually administered 5 months after the second dose. A blood test is then required a minimum of 4-6 weeks after the third dose to determine antibody status (antibodies must be present to protect you against Hepatitis B (the disease) if you are exposed to same.
If you have received the Hepatitis B Vaccine, the documentation of this vaccine series and all of the additional required immunizations is essential to meet the vaccine requirements of the Dental School and the University.
Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis): One dose of Tdap vaccine on or after age 10. If Tdap was given more than 10 years ago, a recent booster is required.
Tuberculosis Test: An IGRA blood test or 2-step PPD completed in the 3 months prior to starting your program is required. If you are unable to access TB testing prior to arrival, UH&CS can provide this service during orientation with an IGRA test. *Please note that the cost of the test may not be covered by your health insurance and that the student will be responsible for any uncovered costs.
COVID 19 Vaccine: Either an original series plus booster AND/OR a single dose of mRNA bivalent vaccine.
