The School of Dental Medicine requires that each dental student have a personal computing device in class each day.
The computing device will be used for the following tasks:
1) Accessing Canvas. All schedules, syllabi and educational materials are delivered electronically. This is web-based, so an internet connection is required.
2) Taking exams. You are responsible for making sure your computing device meets the requirements for using Examsoft. Please note that IPads or similar tablets can be used for everyday use, but cannot be used to take exams. Our Examsoft contract does not cover IPads. Only Windows or Macs that meet the following requirements can be used:
a) Examsoft Requirements: https://examsoft.com/resources/examplify-minimum-system-requirements/ Again, our Examsoft contract does not cover IPads.
b) IF you are quarantined for COVID, but asymptomatic, you may be able to take exams concurrently with the class while at home, using Honorlock. HonorLock Requirements: https://honorlock.kb.help/minimum-system-requirements/
3) Attending online lectures -- some lectures will be given live over Zoom. All laptops must have a working webcam and microphone.
4) Taking notes in class, viewing educational videos, and completing papers and assignments
5) Accessing electronic learning resources and journal articles
You may purchase computers from Dell or Apple with an educational discount from our e-store if you wish: https://case.edu/utech/estore/. Please keep in mind that UTech can only complete on-site warranty repairs for Dell and Apple computers.
Important Considerations (please read carefully):
· Battery Life:
The number of electrical outlets is limited in our classrooms. You will need approximately eight hours of battery life daily. We strongly suggest that you purchase an extended life battery or an extra regular battery. Remember that a larger screen, more RAM, etc. will cause your battery to run down more quickly.
· Weight:
You will carry the laptop with you to and from school and throughout the day on a daily basis for at least the first two years of dental school, so you may want to consider the weight of the computer you order.
· Tablet vs. Laptop:
Some students have indicated that the functions of a tablet computer (e.g. a stylus to write notes directly on the screen) are desirable. Depending on your note-taking style, you may want to consider a tablet computer. Either a traditional computer or a tablet is acceptable, as long as it meets the recommended system specifications for Examsoft.
· Technical support:
The University Technology department ([U]Tech) provides unlimited and complimentary 24/7/365 service and support.
a) help.case.edu
This site offers do-it-yourself articles and training about the technology environment at CWRU. “Live Chat” is also available to speak in real time with the technical support team.
b) 216-368-HELP (4357)
Contact technical support 24/7 for phone assistance.
c) CARE Center
The walk-in center is available for in-person support and service and is located on the lowest level of Kelvin Smith Library. Obtain free unlimited computer support and service in addition to using certified technicians for Dell and Apple for any warranty repairs you may need. For CARE Center location and hours, please visit: https://case.edu/utech/help/care-center/
· Warranty:
We strongly recommend that you purchase a three or four year, full service warranty from the manufacturer that will provide for the replacement of your laptop in the event the manufacturer cannot repair it.
· Software Center:
While you are a registered student at CWRU, you can download a variety of software packages (including Microsoft Office and Symantec Antivirus), generally at no charge, which the university has purchased and made available through site licenses with software manufacturers. To download software safely and securely once you arrive on campus via the wired network, go to http://softwarecenter.case.edu. You can also visit the CARE Center to have software installed on your computer.
· Financial Aid Considerations:
The amount of $2,200.00 has been added to the total cost of attendance, during your first year only, for the purpose of purchasing a laptop computer. For students who take out the full amount of financial aid, please note that you will be reimbursed that amount in August. Federal regulations do not allow for the release of money prior to the start date of classes. If you currently have a computing device, but think you may wish to purchase a new one during your 2nd, 3rd or 4th year here, make sure you set aside the $2200 you receive during the first year for that purpose. You cannot receive more loans to cover the computer in your later years--even if you declined the $2200 in your first year.
· Insurance:
All students are encouraged to purchase a rider on their homeowner’s or renter’s insurance to cover the loss of the computer or the loss of instruments and loupes. Federal regulations do not permit the use of federal financial aid to pay for an item more than once.
