September 24, 2025
Dear RSU 74 Board Members,
September at Carrabec Community School has been an energetic and productive start to the school year. Students and teachers have hit the ground running, dedicating time to teaching, modeling, practicing, and reteaching routines and expected behaviors. Establishing these routines early is helping create a positive and consistent learning environment across all grade levels.
Assessment efforts are well underway, with all students having completed the MAP Growth NWEA assessments. Many students are currently in the process of taking the Maine Through Year assessments, which opened in mid-September and run through the end of October. These assessments provide valuable data that will help guide instruction and support student growth throughout the year.
Our K-5 students had the opportunity to attend a production of Sleeping Beauty at the Lakewood Theatre on Friday, September 19. This experience allowed students to engage with live theatre in the local community, broadening their cultural and artistic learning.
The Scholastic Book Fair also kicked off the week of September 22 and will run through the end of the week. We are excited to host this event once again and are grateful to our parent volunteers for their support in making the fair a success.
On our first early release day, we launched a new school-wide initiative, the Cobra Dens. During a school assembly, students were sorted into six dens, each consisting of a mix of K-8 students and led by five to six teachers and staff members. These dens will remain the same for the school year and will meet monthly to build peer relationships, provide student role models, and foster pride and community within the school. The dens will also compete to earn the most Cobra Points, with rewards and recognition for high-performing groups. Students can earn points by following school expectations and demonstrating positive behavior. When staff recognize individual students for exemplary behavior they will also give the student a Cobra Card, which will go home to families as a positive communication of student behavior and achievement.
We are excited about the launch of the Cobra Dens and look forward to seeing how this initiative strengthens our school community while promoting positive behavior and student engagement. With the continued dedication of our staff and the support of our families, September has set a strong foundation for a successful year at Carrabec Community School.
Sincerely,
Geoffrey Case
