Follow these steps exactly to complete the Electromagnetism/Induction module.
Here is a list of materials you will need to complete this activity.
During this activity you will be constructing a simple audio speaker. A speaker is a simple electrical device that uses the theory of electromagnetism to vibrate a cone that oscillates air molecules. Students will work alone or in groups of two to complete the project. The materials needed to construct a simple foam plate speaker are listed below.
Materials Needed:
Get these to Start
Foam plate (approximately 10 inches diameter)
5 ½” X 8 ½” colored card-stock
1/2 sheet of copy/printer paper
Small index card
Get these when you get to the step where you need them
Approximately 8 feet of enameled magnet wire
Neodymium magnet (3/8 inch diameter, ½ inch height)
Hot glue
Scotch tape
Tools Needed:
Hot Glue Gun
Scissors
Ruler
Pencil
X-acto Knife

Directions
1
Cut two strips of copy/printer paper ½ inch wide by 8 ½ inches long.
2
Wrap one strip of paper around neodymium magnet and place a piece of scotch tape on it to hold it (this roll is used to create a small space between the magnet and second roll of paper. It will eventually be removed). PAPER TO THE MAGNET
3
Put a piece of tape on it to hold it together.
4
Wrap the other strip of paper around first piece of paper. DO NOT TAPE THE second wrap to the first wrap. Use a piece of tape to hold this wrap closed also.
5
Your completed wraps should look like this.
6
Wrap magnet wire around outside of paper roll leaving 8 inches of wire off the beginning and the end.
7
After completing the wrap, put a piece of scotch tape around the wire coil to keep it from unraveling. If the tape is not holding it ask Mr. Fincher how to use hot glue to hold it in place
8
Take the magnet out and carefully slide or pull the inside paper roll out (use long nose pliers if necessary). Be careful not to damage the outside paper roll. Discard the inside paper roll.
9
Glue the paper roll and coil to the middle of the bottom side of the foam plate. Use just a little bit of hot glue and try not to get glue inside the tube. Too much glue will melt the plate
10
The Spider - Cut an index card in half across the short direction.
11
The Spider - Fold each piece back and forth accordion style so there are three bends
12
Use hot glue to attach each spider to the bottom of the foam plate approximately inch away from the coil. Put the glue on the spider then press it in place on the plate.
13
Glue magnet in the middle of the large index card base. Draw lines from corner to corner to find the center.
14
Place the foam plate on top of the base so that coil slides directly on top of magnet. You may need to squish down the spiders so the coil stays over the magnet.
15
Strip ends of enameled wire by either using an X-acto knife and scraping the enamel off the last ½”. Place the wire on the cutting mat and drag the blade over the last 1/2" to scrape the coating off.
16
Take the speaker to Mr. Fincher for testing.
