Inquiry Question: What artists (Michael Jackson, Celia Cruz, Selena Quintanilla) have influenced how we dance? How does history influence our dance world? How can dance change our world?
Artists created collages using pieces from the Waters garden and outdoors play area to design their body in a shape emulating a particular movement energy (sharp, smooth, curved, angular, etc)
Inspired by the halloween festivities and Michael Jackson's Thriller, artists choreographed and created a dance work with a partner. They designed their costumes, outlined their environment, and choreographed movement that emulated some of Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson's vernacular.
Selena Fashion Show
Cumbia musician, dancer, and fashion designer Selena inspired us to design our own clothing out of construction paper, glitter, jewels, and paint. We then held a fashion show in the hallway of Waters Elementary. Each artist was able to walk their clothing down the runway, as well as be the photographer for the artists showing their work. We brainstormed together in big groups about what our clothing design means to us, and worked in partnerships to add final touches to our designs.
Our collaboration included many roles: the designer, the model for other artists' clothes, the seamster (helping each other get Into their clothes) , the photographer, and the audience member cheering on those walking the runway.
Artists experience collaboration in large and small groups to tell stories and create dances.
Dancers journal their movement at the end of each class.
