Big Idea: Preservation
Inquiry Question: How do we slow down in order to foster self-care and appreciate the moment?
Manifesto: To provide growth in the ability to create Art and to use English by providing activities designed for each students ability and providing positive reinforcement. ((Texts between students as well as instructors show how classmates congratulate each other on work well done!)
Classmates joined us in being grateful that we could continue meeting for four weeks during the summer. As instructors we have remarked how quickly students complete assignments. It is a race to have new projects ready. Often they share new adaptations of things learned in addition to finished work in stories and in art.
“Let’s slow the pace for the Summer Session,”Noelle suggested. That turned out to be a lucky resolution since we were joined by three new students with beginners English. We took the time to begin class sharing names, addresses, defining characteristics
(Color of hair, eyes, etc.) family members and birthdays. This made for community building as well as using practical English.
Noelle taught us how to use clay to create 3-dimensional depictions of objects in nature called bas-relief. We kneaded the clay, flattened it with rolling pins, traced designs with skewers and removed layers or added layers with a variety of plastic tools. Each lesson was recorded and made available on YouTube for those who may have missed the lesson.
For English, we spent the beginning of class talking in English, translating back and forth in Spanish. Some days we used separate Zoom “rooms” for beginning students taught by Vicky and intermediate students taught by Rachel and Noelle. We studied phonics, vocabulary, future tense and sentence structure.
We marked our last day of class with a picnic outdoors in Water’s Garden to celebrate 4 July birthdays and Noelle’s last day with us. She joined over a year ago and became one of our “family” right away. We know Noelle is looking forward to her new job, but we miss her already.
