Melanie Ruiz & Timothy David Rey,
Welcome to your class website! The purpose of this site is to show CAPE the development of your arts integration partnership, as guided by your big idea and inquiry question.
Header – include class name, 10-word class description, full names, and roles.
Class information – Students engaged in story creation prompted by writing sprints and brainstorming that became a story in various forms.
Content – In the Fall semester, students focused on holiday-themed work, and created 'The Creepy Crawly Podcast". These short podcast episodes ranged from content using poetry, short story writing and mystery,. Students advertised this podcast throughout the school and one teacher used the podcast as a jumping-off point for his English students to do their own creative writing. Students created merch around the podcast with buttons, and created a wall outside the classroom where class was held, for students to take their own writing prompts and make their own stories. Sometimes the CAPE students would then review these stories on the podcast.
In the Spring semester, students created a Choose Your Own Adventure Podcast episode and then finished the year by creating an improvised performance using humor, props and green screen.
Findings: Students were engaged when they were able to make their own creative decisions, ,and returned repeatedly to the CAPE class. Teaching Artist and CPS teacher, would facilitate with technical assistance, engaging along with the students in writing, or creative game playing and offering opportunities via CAPE to show the work at open gallery nights, recepctions, etc.
