An International Flight

There is not a lot of room on the plane.

It is a long flight...

After at least two dozen trips to Germany, I have learned a few things that make traveling easier and more enjoyable. Here are some of the things I think are useful on a +10 hour flight.

  • Be at the airport about 2.5 hours before the flight is scheduled to leave. Everyone tries to be there 2 hours before the flight, so 2 hours prior is often one of the busiest times. This is why we, as a large group, meet earlier. Earlier is better; later is not an option.
  • Don't forget to bring some kind of a journal. Even if you aren't an artist or a writer, this trip will give you a lot to think about. Journaling will allow you to go back over it throughout the months ahead. Don't just send text messages. Try to keep a real record of what you do each day. It is always super fun to go back, years later, and read those "trip reports."
  • Drink plenty of water during the flight and really try to sleep during the flight to Germany. Jetlag can be rough. So sleep and staying hydrated can help. If you can sleep, do so. It will make the first few days in Germany a lot better.
  • Don't be one of those people who is glued to their laptop, cell phone, or other personal electronics the whole flight. You should see enough new and interesting things on your trip to keep you from getting bored. Keep your eyes and ears open. Soak up all the subtle and fascinating differences. You don't need constant 24/7 entertainment. You will not be bored.
  • Wear layers on the flight. You might find the plane cool or even a bit cold, so bring a sweater or sweatshirt. Make sure whatever you wear is comfortable enough to sit and sleep in for +10 hours.
  • Pack your carry-on bag with care. Take things you can't replace in your carry-on. Obviously, ID and passports, cash, credit cards, prescriptions and glasses should all be in your carry-on or in a travel pouch. A book, my camera, snacks, my journal and a magazine usually make it into my carry-on.
  • When you get off the plane, please double check that you have ALL your things, especially your passport and wallet. Don't leave anything on the plane.
