The Bavaria Tour

Besides our partner school in Lahr, what else do we see in Germany?

Here is an example of the Bavaria trip we took the last few years. This year's trip will be similar, but not exactly the same.

After landing in Frankfurt, we are picked up by a private bus and driven east to Munich. If the weather is good, we try to go to the Olympic Stadium (1972). This area makes for a great walk and opens the discussion on the role of sport in a peaceful society. We also visit the BMW headquarters, which are located close by.

While we are downtown, kids like to shop in the pedestrian zone, eat from the vendors they pass, and explore the great churches (and their towers). We also have a big meal at the traditional Hofbräuhaus.

While still in the Munich area, we will also visit Dachau concentration camp. We discuss this cruel, sad, violent, and terrible part of history. In the past, CHS students have been really mature and respectful, even to the point of needing to leave the group to think and reflect on the tragedy of the Holocaust. Not all other school groups are able to handle this kind of thing. I have been very proud of how mature my students have been in the past.

Then we head south towards the Alps. Our next stop is a hotel near Neuschwanstein Castle (on the border with Austria). We will take a guided tour, go on a 5km hike, and if the weather is good, swim or boat on an alpine lake.

After our visit to the Alps, we leave Bavaria, and head back towards Lake Constance and the town of Meersburg. Meersburg is one of prettiest towns in Germany. The kids love strolling along the lake, exploring the very rustic castle, and even the youth hostel is great - one of my very favorites!

We also make a nice side trip to visit Unteruhldingen and the bronze-age lake dwellings that archeologist discovered in the lake bed. It is amazing!

Finally, we drive back through the Black Forest until we get to our host school in Lahr!

This was our bus and our great driver, Frank.
