How to Apply

Applying to the Exchange Program

You can apply by coming to see me, Mr. Megowan, in room 03 (Fourth Street Center) as soon as the school year begins. I will give you some information and you will have begun the application process. Don't wait until October to "put your name in the hat" or it might be too late. Students need to fill out an application and once that is complete there are a few more things such as teacher recommendations and so on. See me for those forms.

Please keep in mind that many more students apply than can go on the trip. Almost every candidate is highly qualified, so unfortunately you might not be selected even if you are a good candidate. Last time we had well over 20 kids apply for only 15 spots.

Who gets chosen? The group that actually goes on the exchange is ideally around 15 students. There are several factors that determine who goes on the exchange, including the...

1. student's positive attitude

2. student's mature and responsible behavior, you must be a good representative of our school, community, and country.

3. student's commitment to learning German

4. student's social and emotional skills (easy-going, low-stress, self-confident, etc.)

5. student's ability to travel well and live independently

6. student's ability to host the German who is hosting him/her in Germany

7. and the student's compatibility with one of the Germans who is involved in the exchange.

After students have turned in their application forms, their applications will be sent to Germany where the German teachers (who know the kids who are coming to Canby) can evaluate them. The students are paired up based on interests and personalities. But because there are always many more kids who want to go than who can go, some good candidates do not get places on the trip. This is a sad but real part of this program.

The kids who are selected are not only great representatives of our school but also a good match with a specific student from the German school
