We know that potty training and going to the bathroom in unfamiliar places is hard! We will always support your child's bathroom needs in a loving and caring way. If you have questions or concerns, always feel free to reach out to your child's teacher.
The policies we have in place are to ensure that all of the children in our care have a fun, stress-free day while they are at school.
Every student is welcome regardless of potty training success. Helping students gain the skills to recognize when they have the urge to go, and complete all the necessary steps for success is a top priority. If your child is not currently potty trained, please begin the process in preparation for the upcoming school year. Reaching this milestone is a big step in helping students feel confident and independent. Please share where your student is in the potty training process so we can continue to support them at school and at home. Please send your child in a clean, dry diaper/pull up for school, if needed. Please make sure there is always a supply of diapers/pull-ups for your child. We can store diapers in their individual cubby at school, and will let you know when the supply is getting low.
Potty Training in the Classroom
3-4 year olds (Year 1-2 of preschool)
The goal of potty training at this stage is giving exposure to the bathroom through hand washing and toilet talk. Student may continue wearing diapers or Pull-ups as they build their skills.
Students who are working on potty training will be taken to the bathroom within the first 30 minutes of the class session. They will practice sitting on the toilet with no time requirement. If they are unable to go or when they tell us they are done, they will practice pulling up their pants and washing their hands.
Students who are working on potty training will be given another purposeful practice session during the second half of the class period. This will typically occur around recess and snack time. They will follow the same steps as above.
4-5 Year Olds (Year 2-3 of Preschool)
The goal of potty training at this stage will be for students to wear underpants (not pull-ups) and engage in trip training.
Students who are working on potty training will be taken to the bathroom within the first 30 minutes of the class session. They will practice sitting on the toilet for at least 60 seconds. If they are unable to go or when they tell us they are done after 60 seconds, they will practice pulling up their pants and washing their hands.
Students who are working on potty training will be given another purposeful practice session during the second half of the class period. This will typically occur around recess and snack time. They will follow the same steps as above.
If a student has practiced these potty training steps for six months and are not responding, we will work with your family to create an individual plan of support. If you do not want our trained preschool staff to assist your student with the steps outlined above, including assistance with wiping, clothing, and handwashing please fill out the Opt Out form below. By opting out, you are agreeing to come and assist when your child has an accident instead of utilizing a staff member.
