Our before and after care program at The Heights Community Preschool implements the same loving and caring environment as our Preschool Classrooms. We believe that our before and after care program is full of many opportunities for children to continue learning and apply social and emotional skills.
The atmosphere is structured but relaxed. It allows for small group, large group, and individual social interaction through outdoor or gym play, table games and activities, crafts, and free choice. Children learn teamwork, responsibility, cooperation, and friendship skills by planning and directing group games and activities for and among themselves.
The program provides a family-like atmosphere that emphasizes positive interaction, self-control, decision making, and self-responsibility. Developmentally appropriate activities encourage creativity and permit children the freedom to explore and learn through play.
Please bring a lunch for your child. Lunch will not be provided by Camas Community Preschool.
Snacks are provided throughout the day, but you may pack that for your child as well if you'd like!
Please provide extra pants, undies, shirt, and socks in a gallon Ziplock bag labeled with your child’s first and last name.
Note: These are in addition to the extra clothes you are providing for preschool. These will be kept in your child’s childcare cubby.
When you arrive in the morning, bring your child to the Childcare door located at the top of the steps across from the parking lot.
Ring the doorbell and wait for a staff member to greet you. Please do not enter the building.
The staff member will take your child and their belongings into childcare and get them all situated!
You will need your 4-digit Brightwheel code to check your child in (and out).
When you pick up at the end of the day, come to the childcare door. Ring the doorbell and wait for a staff member.
A staff member will collect your child and their belongings before handing them off to you. Please note that only approved contacts are allowed to pick up your child. Approved pick -ups can be added in your child's profile on the Brightwheel app. Proof of ID will be asked for.
Quiet Time happens daily for all children in childcare after lunch.
Quiet Time is located in a separate room from the common areas. There is specialty lighting, peaceful music and a soft mat (provided).
Quiet Time is a 30 minute period of relaxation after lunch at noon.
Your child may bring a small blanket and/or stuffy that can be used during this time.

Personal toys and items from home
(toys, purses, multiple stuffies, sunglasses, etc.)
We understand that bringing items from home can be a comfort to kiddos during their day, but these items can cause undue stress for the child and staff members as they have to be monitored and continually kept track of. We have a multitude of toys that your child will have access to during their time at childcare.
Please help us by strictly enforcing this policy with your child. We greatly appreciate it.
Behavior Support in the Childcare Setting
Our childcare is an extended day opportunity for students enrolled in our multi-age preschool classrooms. We have staff who escort students to and from the childcare classroom on campus. We have limited capacity for our childcare classroom based on state and local requirements for space and staffing. All families are welcome to apply for childcare as part of the yearly registration process. Once all space is full, we will develop a waitlist and notify families in order, when space becomes available.
Some students qualify for district provided preschool based on eligibility for special services. Childcare is not part of the district provided preschool program, and is fee based. The preschool instructors and specialists will collaborate to help make it a successful experience as much as possible for everyone. Our goal is to offer this service to all of our families provided space is available, and work together to meet everyone’s needs.
Most students will adjust extremely well to the childcare setting. There is also the possibility that some students may have very specific needs that may be challenging to meet given our staffing capacity. If we exhaust all support options and strategies, and we are unable to keep a student safe given their level of need, there is a possibility that a student will not be able to continue in our childcare program. We will follow the steps in the chart below as necessary to make every possible effort to create a safe and positive experience for each child.
Before Preschool Starts
The preschool staff and childcare staff will meet to go over the IEP goals for each student receiving specially designed instruction and any other student who is known to the team, and struggled in the childcare setting in the past. They will share the tools and strategies that we know to be most helpful for each specific student, as well as any important information that will help the childcare team be proactive in the way they set up their classroom, choose systems and routines, and assign supervision.
End of September
The team will check in to discuss how students are adjusting to the beginning of the year and the new environment. If a student is struggling the team will develop a plan of support and a system for tracking success that fits within the childcare team's capacity. The plan will be communicated to the family and the family will be asked for input. We will monitor the plan for 2-4 weeks to see if the student is making progress.
End of October
At the end of the monitoring cycle, the team will meet again to discuss progress. We may need to adjust the plan and the data tracking system at this time. The family will be part of this team and your input will be valued.
If needed, a new support plan will be tracked for an additional 2-4 weeks.
Ongoing
As long as the team is able to help support and keep all students safe as the student gains skills for success, we will continue to work as a team with the family to monitor and adjust throughout the school year until a support plan is no longer needed.
Extreme Safety Concerns
If there is a situation where there is an extreme safety concern, the team will immediately call a meeting with the family and administration to develop a plan of support and to discuss possible next steps. Our goal is to work together to provide the childcare service for all students, and in some situations that will require a deeper level of collaboration and support.
