It is our goal at The Heights Community Preschool to help every child be successful in school, ensuring a bright future for all. For some students this can mean receiving more individual services in order to address issues that impact a student's school success.
We believe that early intervention is the best tool available to ensure success for each student for their whole academic career.
All of the teachers at The Heights Community Preschool believe that early intervention can be key to a child's happiness and success in school. Because of this, we are always assessing their development while they are with us. If we notice their social, emotional or academic learning is being impacted we will connect with families to develop a team plan.
The Special Services Department is a team of extraordinary professionals dedicated to providing excellence in education for all children. They recognize that all children develop and learn at different rates. While some children have few learning challenges, others may need greater assistance. When it is suspected that a child may need specially designed instruction and support tailored to their individual needs, they may be referred to a screening process called Child Find.
Our team conducts Child Find screenings for the purpose of locating, evaluating, and identifying students with concerns about a child’s health, hearing, intellectual function, language, learning, movement, serious behavioral needs, speech, or vision. At the screening a student will complete a series of activities to assess if they may be at risk in certain developmental areas. If a child is identified as at risk through the screening process, they may be referred for further assessment to determine if specially designed instruction (SDI) is needed. Our preschool is inclusive and set up to meet the needs of all students with access to a certified special education teacher in each classroom. If a student is identified as needing special education, they will be able to access SDI in their current classroom setting. In rare instances, a student at our Papermaker Preschool branch, located at Camas High School, may be better served at The Heights campus if they are identified for SDI. If your student lives outside of the Camas School District we will help you get set up with the Child Find process in your home district. If you live outside the Camas School District and your student qualifies for special education they would need to transfer to their district of residence to receive their special education services.
