Since my major is Special Education K-12, I have had the opportunity to take several classes with a focus of special education during my time at BYU-Idaho. In one of the first classes I took, Exceptional Students, I learned about the 13 disability categories, Learning these disability categories, prongs of eligibility, special education law, and the referral process have prepared me to be a better special education teacher. These slides are just an example of the work I do to learn about the various disabilities.
Although it is sometimes forgotten when speaking of health and safety, mental health is one of the biggest threats to health and safety that students are facing today. Depending on the severity of a mental disorder, these conditions may even qualify a student for special education services under IDEA.
One of my classes focuses specifically on emotional, mental, and behavioral disorders. My responses to this essay midterm is a representation of some of what I have learned about this topic. Knowing about these disorders and being able to find the right help for a child who is struggling could literally mean the difference between life and death for someone.
The second document here discusses a couple imporant topics, such as "Perspectives of Parents and Families" of children with EBD and "Trends and Issues Affecting the Field of Emotional and Behavior Disorders."
