In my Family & Community Relationships class (ECSE421), we learned about and were quizzed on the key components of HIPAA and FERPA. We have reviewed these laws in many other classes. Later in my college career, I had the chance to teach about HIPAA and FERPA to a class of younger students, where I emphasized the importance of being familiar with and following these laws. This information I presented is shown in the attached slides.
I accessed and used medical records during Senior Practicum. I reviewed the file of one girl in our class. She has cerebral palsy and reading about her medical needs helped me understand her better and be more capable of helping her.
I reviewed the file of another student who has occasional seizures. He did have a seizure one day while I was at school. I did not panic in the moment because I knew this was not out of the ordinary and that there was a plan in place to help him.
For these two reasons and many others, being familiar with you students' health and medical records is an essential part of being an effective teacher.
