Keeper of the Lost Cities

“I could ask Forkle for a magsidian crystal,” Fitz offered.
A few months ago, Sophie would have said yes. But she was tired of the Black Swan’s 100-year-span plans. She was tired of the almost deaths. The only real win they had had was with the neverseen storehouse. Even that wasn't really a battle, just an uninterrupted mission that happened to go well.
“No, Forkle will probably just tell us to let the adults handle it,” Sophie said.
“I could ask my dad,” Biana offered.
“That could work," Sophie said hesitantly. It felt like the answer to all of this was right under their noses, and she had a good feeling she was missing something. A mistake like that could kill. More than it already had. Her mind flashed with all the kind people they'd lost. Kenric. Calla. Breille. Half of Mr. Forkle. Jolie. Cyrah. She couldn't lose anyone else. That could be enough to break her.
Suddenly, all the color in Dex’s face vanished. “I-I think, maybe… the word ‘power source’ was intentional. I think they were talking about a literal power source, like a technical one.”
“How could that work?” Marella asked, and the puzzled expressions on everyone's faces confirmed that everyone was just as lost as Sophie.
“Could you enhance me for a minute, Sophie? I think that could help me get a better way to explain and understand it.”
“Sure,” Sophie said, as she closed her eyes and let her enhancing turn on. She held Dex’s hand as he closed his eyes and mumbled in the technopathic language. Every second, the crease between Dex's eyebrows got deeper until, finally, after what seemed like an eternity, he opened his eyes and spoke.
“So, I could be wrong, but I think she has, like a code embedded in her DNA or fingerprint that can control some sort of elemental power source,” Dex said carefully.
“Sooooo… do we know where this power source is?” Marella asked.
“Honestly, it could be pretty much anywhere,” Dex admitted.
Sophie held her chest, tying all her mixed emotions into the knot under her ribs. But some wouldn't stay put. Just when they thought they had learned something, it turned out it didn't really matter, because they were lacking other information. She could feel it; the answers were just out of her reach. If she didn't reach them soon enough, she, or someone she loved, would pay the price. And their birth funds would be useless for more reasons than one.
To be continued next month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As they sat under the Pankakes tree, thinking about what Elysian had said before departing into the mist. Finally, breaking the awkward silence, Dex said, “so just so I’m clear, this…person, Elysian, said, ‘if you wish to see the truth behind me, and what is, was, and will be everyone and thing, meet me where dawn light meets the darkness of midnight’, right?”
Sophie, chills running up her back at the word, remembering the words exactly as the eerie, mystical voice of Elysian said them. “Yes, that is right,” she said.
Then, her face paled as she realized…
“What is it?” Marrella said, “And don't deny it, because all of a sudden you turned a whole new level of greenness."
“It's just… I think I know where Elysian meant. On the human maps, it is called the Sahara desert, and it is on what humans call the Terminator, where day and night intersect. It's complicated, but I'm sure that's what they were talking about. Here, it's called…” she choked down what she wasn't sure was a cry, a scream, or pure horror, or all three. “Exile.”
“WHAT!!” Dex, Biana, Fitz, Marrella, Lihn, Tam, Maruca, Wylie, and Keefe yelled in unison. Silveny even transmitted it.
Biana, speaking slowly, as if she said the wrong word and cloaked figures would show up and kidnap all of them. “So… if we do this… and don't act like we don't all know we will…how do we get there? It's not like we all have a magsidian leaping crystal in our pockets, or even possessions of them, and also, can't it be a trap, and second of all, how can we trust Elysian?”
“We can't, but we have to,” Sophie mumbled, hating that after every thing, this person chooses to show up and say ‘hi! Everything you've ever known is not true.’
The game was changing, but Sophie, the black swan, the council, and everyone else were falling behind. They needed a plan. A real one.
