Saktuliq students use art to help learn about and remember metamorphosis and life cycle of butterflies. Fall 2022
Brian Hutton joined the school in Saktuliq (Shaktoolik) January 6-18, 2020. He worked with all the students there to build self confidence, self expression, and performance skills. Students played theatre and writing games to build the skills they would need. Individually and as class groups, students composed songs and wrote poetry, ultimately performing before the community. This residency was a great opportunity for students to stretch their skills and to experience the joy of bringing a project all the way from brainstorm to publishing.
Kindergarten students watch their little director to sing their noise on cue. Saktuliq (Shaktoolik) Alaska, 2020.
Elementary students gained performance confidence by practicing games with animal sounds, charades, and role playing. Students imagined and performed what it would be like to live on the planet of maple syrup, ice, or popcorn. They chose animal sounds and formed choirs, watching their director for singing cues.
Middle School students modified the Haiku form, writing lines of poetry in 5 or 7 syllables. They made simple statements of observation that they could afterwards combine to form a short poem. Saktuliq (Shaktoolik) Alaska, 2020.
