3rd grade students from the school in Kuuyuk participated in this SILKAT Arts and Culture unit exploring the cultural value of "Respect for Nature" and the mathematical concept of dilation (zoom in) through these landscape paintings. You can see how each student thought about which details are perceivable only from great distance and which are revealed when given a closer viewpoint.
In this project, extra care was given to the artistic feature of texture as students chose details to build into a third dimension.

Pre-K and Kindergarten students got to experiment and explore with paints. Painting, as a medium, opens up space for expression and exploration because, unlike pencil, crayon, and marker drawings, paint tends to me a little less controlled and the artist is constantly making adjustments to what it does on the page.
first grade students explored drawing with self-portraiture and Yoda drawings. Students learned about how to observe and depict details.
They also had the opportunity to learn new techniques in watercolor, experimenting with a watercolor wash and the use of salt to create texturing. students created simple landscape images and sunset images.
These young artists captured feelings of balance and calm with watercolor illustrations that explore symmetry , warm and cool colors, and rely heavily of the wash technique.
Koyuk 3rd graders used warm and cool colors to create landscapes and animal paintings, relying heavily on crisp lines and deep colors to create mood in their artwork.
5rd grader students depicted the nigh sky, fronting local imagery of a silhouetted whale's tale or the northern lights to serve as focal points in their work.
6th grade students explore shading when they paint, creating shadow and reflection on the surface of the water or glass in their illustrations.
These middle school artists explore seascapes, depicting a ship on the water and marine wildlife. Each artist works to capture the variety of colors they see daily in the ocean around their home village.
In their last year of middle school, these students grate a variety of artwork based around their own interests.
Students explore balance and symmetry, landscapes and silhouette, and mix the media of paint with crayon and pencil with marker to create various coloring effects.
Teachers practice and deepen their own arts skills to bring new and strengthened techniques into the classroom. Several local teachers attended arts trainings in watercolor, created observational and imaginative projects together and on their own.
Student artwork from Kuuyuk is up in the Unalakleet Bering Air terminal (Sept. 27, 2019).
First grade students warm up for the school year with self portraits that show their individuality and personality in their features, expression, and background color and design choices.
