My Life in Elim

Aniguiin School's grade 4/5 class in Neviarcualuq (Elim) started the year with a quick writing assignment about their experiences, coupled with 3D decorations and 2D illustrations of their writing.

Elim was honored to host artist Beckie Etukeok-Johnson for two weeks in February. Beckie engaged students in grades K-12 in a variety of mediums, from drawing, to jewelry making, to beading, and sewing. Students were also privileged to listen to Beckie read traditional stories to them as they drew what they heard. The Aniguiin School staff enjoyed professional development with Beckie as she shared the defining qualities of the distinct regions of Alaska, as well as what makes the art of each region unique.

STEAM Collaborative Projects

Pairs of students in Joseph Tarr's 5th-5th grade class work together to integrate art with science and math as they engineer bridges out of everyday objects.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) projects like this one prepare students for life and workplace challenges. These 4th and 5th graders are elarning to work together, persevere and problem solve through difficulty, and build a product they are proud of.

Translated Valentines

Students in Neviarcualuq (Elim) use this lesson to create translated Valentines using languages traditional to their families and the cultures of their region.

This is a part of the ongoing effort to incorporate native languages into our schools, building common culture between schools and the communities they serve.

Love those Anemomes

This lesson comes from Project ARTiculate.

Students explored marine biology with a study of sea anemones as well as dipping their toes in some of the mathematical beauty of the natural world with the exploration of radial design.

Mask Making - Lesson Developed by Nita Yurrliq Rearden

Students explored the Yupik tradition of mask making with these paper masks.

Lessons discussed the traditional sources of color in local stones and dyes, exploring both practical and aesthetic reasons for use of limited palette.

This project asks students to observe traditional mask shames and forms to make decisions about their own projects.

The tri-part masks are made to represent spirit, animal, and place.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students in Neviarcualuq explore masking tape as a resist with this "Birch Trees" watercolor project.

Students use chalk pastels to create landscapes, sky-scapes, and hearts expressing their connection to the natural and human world around them.

Cans with Andy Warhol

Using the Project ARTiculate Kit "Cans with Andy Warhol," elementary students from Neviarcualuq (Elim) study the history of pop art with a focus on Andy Warhol. Each student selects a theme and designs his or her own can to create a composite wall installment representing the individuality and creativity of the class as a whole, even while mimicing the relative uniformity of pattern.
