Sharing stories, photos, and videos give individuals an opportunity to create communal narratives that are reflective of the diversity of experience of the greater alumni community. Below are ideas on how to use social media to engage your alumni in community storytelling.
Best Practice: use hashtags whenever possible in your social media engagement activities. Hashtags help others find your posts and are a means of building a communal narrative.
Many alumni—from medical workers to artists—are helping during this crisis: making masks, supporting food banks, delivering food, developing vaccines, and so much more. Encourage alumni to share stories and acknowledge other alumni friends on your social media channels. Be sure to use hashtags like #EverTrue, #BrunoniansTogether, and #BrunoniansCare.
Ask alumni in your community to post photos of their “work from home” spaces or share photos of their everyday activities on your social media pages with the hashtags #BrunoniansAtHome and/or #BrunoniansAtWork. Make sure to encourage alumni to show off their Brown swag and memorabilia in these photos.
One themed idea to consider is photos of alumni wearing their favorite facemasks.
We are living through an unprecedented time in history and photos alone may not capture the historic significance of this moment. Why not ask your alumni to share videos of family members interviewing each other about their experience. Share the interviews on your group’s social media pages with the hashtags #BrunoniansAtHome and/or #BrunoniansAtWork.
Here is a step by step guide on how to execute this project.
Ask alumni to share a picture of what they are reading today or their favorite book with the hashtag #BrunoniansBookClub on your social media page. If this activity generates a lot of social media engagement, your group should consider organizing a virtual book club event.
