NEWS FROM THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NURSE’S OFFICE!
The State of Connecticut and the Brooklyn Board of Education have specific guidelines related to school entrance requirements, mandated screenings, medications and protocols for the care of the ill child.
1. Physical Exam and Immunization Requirements:
PRESCHOOL REQUIREMENTS: A physical exam with hemoglobin and completed immunizations are required prior to entry and annually while enrolled in preschool.
KINDERGARTEN REQUIREMENTS: A current physical exam, done during the previous 12 months, with completed immunizations are required prior to entrance into kindergarten.
TRANSFER STUDENTS: Any student transferring into THE Brooklyn School District from out-of- state must provide a current physical exam
done during the previous 12 months and written proof of immunizations required by the State of Connecticut prior to entry.
2. Screenings:
Hearing Screening: The State of Connecticut General statutes Sec. 10-214(b) requires that local Boards of Education provide audiometric screening for hearing to each pupil in grades kindergarten, one, three and four. The purpose of the screening is for early detection of hearing problems.
The procedure for the hearing screening is brief and uncomplicated. The school nurse may perform the hearing screening which requires your child to identify, in each ear, sounds provided by an audiometer.
Vision Screening: The State of Connecticut General statutes Sec. 10-214(a) requires that local Boards of Education provide vision screening for each pupil in grades kindergarten, one, three and four. The purpose of the screening is for early detection of visual problems.
The procedure for the vision screening is brief and uncomplicated. The school nurse may perform the vision screening which requires your child to identify objects or letters (Snellen Eye Chart) while standing at a prescribed distance from the chart.
Or, when available, the Lion’s Club may provide free screening using technology that scans both eyes for possible vision problems. The program is called KidsSight. It is free of charge and Lion’s Club members work with the school nurses to screen students and make the proper referrals.
All students in grades kindergarten, one, three and four will be screened for vision and hearing. You may choose refusal of the vision and or hearing screen for your child by providing a written and signed statement to the nurse at your child’s school indicating that you do not want the school to provide vision and or hearing screen for your child.
3. Medication Policy:
No medication will be given without a physician’s written order, including over the counter medications such as but not limited to acetaminophen & ibuprofen.
No medication will be given without parental written permission.
All medication must be transported to and from the school by an ADULT.
All medication must be delivered in a pharmacy labeled bottle or in manufacturer’s packaging.
4. Illness:
THE ILL CHILD: A child who shows signs of illness should remain at home. Symptoms of fever, rash, conjunctivitis (pink-eye), vomiting, and persistent sore throat, should be considered reason for keeping a child at home. This allows them to recover, seek medical advice and protects the other students from illness. Any child with a temperature of 100.0 degrees or higher will be sent home. Your family physician should be consulted for illnesses and injuries that occur at home.
