Are YOU Ready for Top God?

Fitness

This week we walked to the track. For warm up we play flinch ball. Then we played sharks and minnows. I was a minnow. We played three rounds. It was very toasty walking! We walked back when we were done. I carried the bag of cones. We walked in two lines 2 by 2. It’s

longer going to the track than the park. Mr. Keenan takes us to the track. We cleaned tables when we got back and then went outside to get picked up.

 Fitness!

By Scarlet.

In Fitness we went to the track. We usually go to the park but it was different this time and when we went to the track we all put our stuff down like the water bottles we brought. We played a round of Flinch ball. How you play is that one person is in the center with the Dodgeball. Then they will pretend to throw it at you or they will actually throw it at you but the people they throw it at always have their hands behind their back. If they don't throw it at them and they take their hands out from behind their backs then they are out. If they actually throw them the ball and they don't catch it, they are out. After we played a few rounds for a warm up, we went and voted on which games to play. Then we played Sharks and Minnows And that's what we did in Fitness.

Garden

We finally got the plants in the ground. The  garden is going super good and the plants are super happy. We have 2 trees  in the back and some nice ground cover  and a fern in the front. It’s so cool what a couple seeds can do. We also put some sunflowers in the back as a spiral within bricks. A nice donation was a garden box and we fit a lot in there.

Art

By: Theo

In art this week we are finishing art gallery pieces. People are making all sorts of art. Some are using clay, others are using markers. I was inspired by the works of Yayoi Kusama and I am making dot art. It is my favorite type of art I learned about this year. I am very excited to show you my art piece.

Thank for reading and we hope you tune in next week

Art Class

By Abby and Tessa

Hey! It's Abby again talking about art. If you know me, my favorite class is art class. My least favorite class in school is reading or writing but really because I don't really like to read books that I'm forced to read and I don't really like writing since I don't really like doing articles and being forced to do them. But in an art class you can listen to music if you have a justice deal and it's very calming and it helps you be patient. You get to be creative in your own way and you don't have to do it in some specific order unless you want to. You can be free to do whatever technique you want to do in art class. There is also no right or wrong in art class. Now I will talk about what I am working on an art class, it's called Word Art. Word Art is where you have to make a draft and make wobbly lines but they cannot be hard they have to be soft and sort of bouncy. Sort of like up and down but softer and not too hard. And then we have to make a phrase that is not too long but a quick phrase. Sort of something like this: Dogs are cute. It can be anything you want but it has to be a short phrase, three words at least and it can't be too long. You have to make sure that the words are all capitalized and you have to make sure that they reach the line from top to bottom. There will be at least two lines. Then you have to choose three colors to color it in. I’m not using marker because it's the shiny type of paper and it will smear. That will not be good for an art project that you will take home. I’ve got to go. Tata!

Hi! This is Tessa ad it's nice to write about art again! In our class we are working on Exaggerated Word Art. We use this kind of metallic paper that sounds super cool when you bend it back and forth. You use a marker and you write some waves on it and then you write the letters along the waves you drew. You can use colored markers and I highly recommend using Sharpies! You make the writing that you're putting down memorable. Something nice, you know, like meaningful to other people but simple. I am also working on something else but can't tell you what it is because it's a surprise until Top God. I do not know if the Exaggerated Word Art is going to be in Top God, but if it is, it's going to look great.

That's Tessa and Abby signing off from Flamingo South and art news. We hope to write to you guys next week 😁😌

Geography Elective 2

By Dylan

In Geography we are doing a lot of things including finding cool places in Google Earth. We are going to the coordinates that Mr. E is giving us and we have found places with interesting names… like my house! My house! Yeaaaaah!!!!!! Also, Goofy Goobers, Peter Griffin Pharmacy, and yes, these are all actual places. We have been having a lot of fun using Google Earth and soon, we are going to take a field trip to the tram. The tram is connected to the hospital where I was born. There's also been very cool things happening in other electives, like gardening, because they went on a field trip to get plants and planted them. That was very cool and they looked very nice. In conclusion, electives make Friday the best day.

Fitness the Track

by Mati

In Fitness we went to the track. Specifically, the track in Duniway Park next to the Under Armor building. It's a long, gray, oval track, and in the middle of the track is a field of astroturf. We play Sharks and Minnows there, and I kept falling and getting the little bits of black rubber stuck in my shoes. It was really fun but really slippery on the turf. In the beginning, we went to the field near the track and played Flinch Ball, where there’s a circle of people and someone's in the center. The person in the center pretends to throw the ball at you and you have to keep your hands behind your back. They can actually throw the ball at you also and you have to catch it. But if they don't throw the ball at you and your hands try to catch the ball, then you're out. You take a step back when you're out. The walk to and from was tiring. This is Mati signing out.

LOOK OUT!

TOP GOD COMING SOON!

#2 FEAT. RILEY!!!

By Riley and Ewan

We are doing a project for an event that is coming up soon… TOP GOD. During Top God you will end up voting for an 8th grader based on their presentation about a thing like Greek and Roman gods… maybe Norse mythology… but there can only be one winner…

Whichever one you vote for ends up being the…top…GOD. (The patron saint of the school, if you will.) Contrary to popular belief (Wait, no, there is no “popular belief”. I gotta check my sources.), Top God is not being held on school campus. Instead, it’s being held at the UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND!!! Top God is the last major event (and the major event) in the school year before graduation, and usually, most of the students in the presentations graduate from Bridges that year.

There are also going to be science boards from the flamingos, art from the kids, and the Ambassador Awards where Ambassadors get awards (of course!)

In the end, one student is crowned winner, their god is made protector of the school, and I cry for all the other campaigners. It’s in the evening two weeks from now.

Mr. Demon Keenan won't let us make this any bigger, so see you later!!!!

The Banned Book

Okay so everyone's pretty excited about this but in Mr. Keenan's reading we are reading a Banned Book! (A Banned Book is something that is not used academically) It's banned supposedly because of its references to certain themes and some swearing*. I'm still curious because it said it was banned in the US but I guess not in Portland? Anyway, in my excitement at reading a Banned Book I forgot to name the book it's called Bridge to Terabithia. I think we're all thrilled to be doing a novel study on  a book with such an interesting history. Anyway, what we're going to be doing is we're going to be reading a couple chapters and then stopping and doing a question packet There's also a character tracker packet which is where we get to keep tabs on the characters. Anyway, that's really all I can write about. I'm just dragging out as many words as I can right now to make it look good because either this or double spacing it or increasing the size bye.

I Got a Cube! (:

By Rowan

Well let me tell you how the cube works. So every week on Thursday Mrs. Hofeld, Ms. Pritchard, and Mr. Keenan think about the good things we have done according to the core values: justice, compassion, honor, excellence, citizenship, and integrity. I got a cube for citizenship because, well, a lot of people forget to push in their chairs after getting up. So it really irritates me when I see a chair and it looks like a mess. So I just push them in and I got a cube for citizenship because I was cleaning up the classroom. Yay!

Top God

Nelson

What's up, Top God is a competition between all the 8th graders. They each choose a God and they make a poster about it to be exact 14 days until the competition then The students and their teachers will choose the winner. Personally, I'm voting for Gelos, the god of laughter; you can choose anywhere from Aphrodite, Poseidon, Hercules and many more. The 8th graders have worked very hard on these posters and they've even prepared a speech. At the event there will also be the art gallery and science boards. Vote for Gelos 2024-2025 for Top God Go laughter.

     Fitness but on the field

At fitness, we went to the field and tried out games like flinch ball. How flinch ball works is when a group of students are in a circle and someone raises their hand to be chosen as tagger. The objective for the players is to put your hands behind your back. However there are multiple ways to get out

 1. If the tagger throws the ball and you miss it’s out for you

 2. If the tagger pretends to throw the ball and you put your hands up your out.

Bridges Art: Exaggerated Words

By Ben

Life beholds much beauty and many wonders in its domain. Such wonders can be a lot of things and feel lots of emotions, for example, the wonder that is humanity. We can embrace these wonders in our world with various makings from us humans. One of the ways we can embrace them is by making art or poetry to express our own feelings. Here at Bridges we have found a third way to express, by combining both ways into something equally true. One of our most truly embracing pieces here at Bridges is the Exaggerated Words project! At first look, the exaggerated words don't seem that special of an art piece. The thing is, it is just a name, and you should never judge a book by its cover. They may be exaggerated, but these quotes and sayings can be just as, if not more, effective than non-exaggerated words. Also, if you add art to the equation, it can be beautiful to any eye. These pieces will be amazing to anyone and everyone who is blessed to see one of the Flamingos' best works.

Summarizing Unbroken - Part 2

By Daniel

After an entire year, we finished Unbroken. The ending, according to my teacher, was symbolic. Because at the beginning of the story, Louie was a thief. He started running, thanks to his brother's guidance. Louie ran with the Olympic torch. Louie turned a new leaf after the war, and he had gotten a wife. He had problems with alchohol and was intent on murdering his captor, nicknamed The Bird. And he had a kid. But when the baby started crying, Louie started shaking the baby because he did not know how to stop them from crying. His wife wanted a divorce and Louie didn't know how to deal with it. They had been torn apart, and his wife had come back because she had nowhere else to go. And she was still waiting on the divorce papers. She had gone to a church in Texas and this is also where their house is. She had been enlightened and said she no longer wanted a divorce. She could get Louie to go to church. Soon Louie had stopped drinking and he no longer intended to kill The Bird. But he did not know The Bird had already taken his own life. When he had returned to Japan, he found out about this. After a while, Louie’s friends and family had died. But that’s all I have for now. Have a good day! 👍

Frindle The New Read Aloud

By Madelyn

There is a new read aloud, and it is called Frindle. The main character is Nick. He likes to make jokes in class. It takes place at Lincoln Elementary School. The teacher is Miss Granger and she is the language arts teacher. She really likes dictionaries. We are currently on chapter 9 and it is getting very exciting. One part we are currently talking about is the plot diagram which shows us where we are in the book. There are different ones like exposition which is the beginning of the book where we get to know the characters. The next one is conflict or the rising action when they're finding the problem. Then the climax, after which the plot comes back down and they're solving the problem. And then towards the end, the falling action which is when the book is coming to the end. We are not currently not that far into the book but there will be more next week. This is Madelyn, signing out from Flamingo South.

Math

Gallery

5/2/24

By Sam L.

In Math the past few weeks, I have been doing a gallery project. For the gallery piece, I have been using what I have learned in math to create art with Desmos, a math web tool. Desmos has many things, including a graphing calculator, which is what I used. Using the graphing calculator we put in equations making our art. I used y equals x to the power of different things to y artwork. Using x to the power of 3, you can get a sort of flower-like middle that goes in two directions. But if you use negative x, you can get the line on the other side of the x, y-axis. And you can rotate it using the square root of the x. Using this I had a flower-like middle with the outsides going in eight different directions. How it works is if you are cubing x is x is one y is one, but if x is three y is twenty-seven. Making it so that it exponentially grows in size. And I then rotated it so the middle looked similar to a flower. Also in Math, I recently learned the quadratic formula and how to use it. It is quite interesting once you know how to use it while also being confused about how it works to find x. Once I figured out how to use it, it was fun and somewhat fast to use. That is what I have been doing in math class.

Art gallery

The art gallery is an optional thing where you can make an art piece for top God. I can't really talk about Top God because it's a secret, but what I can tell you is the art piece I'm working on. I'm doing a piece that is focused on a black hole with the Galaxy getting sucked into it. At first I did watercolor then and I Miss Pritchard said I should Paint It Black first so I did then I tried watercolor but it didn't work so I stuck with normal paint. First, I painted the background black then I'm working on the Galaxy getting sucked in then I'm going to Splatter it with white paint so there are Stars. After that I want to work on the planet's spaceships and those things getting sucked into the black hole. Finally I want to work on the black hole itself. For everyone doing the art gallery has to do an artist statement it has to be two to three lines about it and meaning it has to mean  something to the artist.
