Traveling to England

Bridges Social Studies: England Part 2

By Ben

The world is an unfathomable huge place, covered in every nook and cranny with the feel of adventure. In social studies at Bridges, we have been discovering these places one by one, making sure we have the full four courses on what they have to offer. Right now we are exploring southeast England! We have already discovered other regions of England and now we are moving on to the southeast. So far we have discovered the history of the coast and how it was fortified with stone and beauty. The English were always prepared naval-wise in times of war from Napoleon to WW2. The coast, though, is now a peaceful place bustling with trade and tourism post-wartimes. It is amazing how you can mold something with a bad past into something new and friendly. In southeast England you can enjoy a holiday with amazing history all around. We have seen it all and then some with the awesome realm of England and even then there is still a lot to learn!

The United Mexican States, also known as Mexico, is a big tourist attraction for the southern states. This country has a very varied climate. The southern part of the country is warmer than the northern climate given its closer to the equator. The northern climate is colder than the south year round. Up north lies the Altiplano Central which leads into our next bit, tourist attractions! The Altiplano Central is one of the many attractions like the Chichen Itza, Tulum and Mexico city. You can learn this and more in Mr. Keenan’s class of the wonders of the world.

Owls

Every week on Tuesday we learn about a different animal that uses the wetland. This week we learned about owls. We learn about them from Clackamas Community college. Owls have different calls and many adaptations. One owl call sounds like: who cooks for you. Some of their adaptations are their talons, ears, feathers, and eyes. Let's talk about the talons. Their talons are razor-sharp claws as three in front one in the back to help cage their prey. Now let's talk about the ears. Owl's ears are not like ours; one ear is higher than the other one. This helps them pinpoint where the sound is coming from so they can find their prey or predators. Their eyes are exciting. The owl's eyes are actually around the same size as ours but their head is so small that their eyes stick out a little. They use their eyes to look for prey and predators. Which is relatable for us humans because we all have one or two enemies am I right. The feathers they're shaped weirdly unlike other birds so when they flap their wings it doesn't make any noise so they can just sneak up on their prey and Boom. There are many types of owls but the most common is the barn owl. If you look at a barn owl, you'll see that there's a ring around its face. That ring shows its face is sort of shaped like a bowl. The bull shaped face is supposed to be there so sound gets cupped into its face and pushed right into its ears fascinating, huh. Owls are fascinating creatures and if you go out at night, you might see one because as many people know they're nocturnal. Bye see you next time!

Owls

By Madelyn

In science we have been watching live streams with the Clackamas Community College. Every Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:00 we sign on and there is a different animal. This time it was Owls. There are many different kinds of owls, from small owls to enormous owls. We get a worksheet and that is where we put our drawings and write our notes.

One activity was a memory game. First the lady shows us a few items and then puts a cover over them so we could not see them. Then on paper we do our best to memorize. Then after a minute she shows us all the objects and tells us what they are and how they relate to the animals. The next activity we did was to guess types of owl calls. She shared her screen and there were sounds one, two, three and four then. We listened to all the calls then we had to write them down on our paper. Then she tells us what calls were. After that we were kind of short on time so she did questions she does that at the end of every live stream. I really like doing and watching the Clackamas Community College Wetlands live stream.

Owls!

By Sam S.

3/7/24

Hello. This week I’m going to be talking about our livestream that we watched about owls. Every Tuesday we watch a livestream streaming from Clackamas Community College in Oregon City. The live stream is about animals who live near the college. This week it was about owls, and I am going to be telling you some fun facts and notes that I took during the stream! Their beak and talons are especially sharp to make it easier to cut into prey. For eating habits, owls are carnivores meaning they only eat meat. They mostly eat rodents, small mammals, and bugs. Most owls have huge eyes because their large pupils help them see in the dark. Speaking of the dark, owls are nocturnal meaning they are active at night and not as much in the day. Owls make nests in holes of trees. Sizing ranges with owls. They can be big or small. Now for their amazing body features! When owls fly, they fly silently because their feathers on their wings are very light and special to help them creep up on prey, hide easily, and just generally keep them warm. Owls have very good sight and hearing. As I mentioned hearing, they also have a bowl shaped face to make sound go directly into their ears. It’s called a facial disk. And as I mentioned sight, unlike most birds, their eyes are at the front of their head instead of the side. They also can’t move their eyes, that's why they can move their heads 270 degrees around. Like most birds, owls have hollow bones, so they are very light.  They have uneven ears to make it easier for them to hear where sound is coming from. Owls swallow their prey whole because they can’t digest food. Different owls make different noises. The owls we learned about and the ones I have seen are the barn owl, the barred owl, great horned owl, snowy owl, and there were a few others. Anyways, that’s what I have for a website this week. Thanks for reading!

Cubes: What Are They

By Freddie

So you read the title, you saw it. So… cubes, what are they? Well as you could imagine they are small plastic cubes that are used as a reward system. This reward system is used when a student demonstrates one or more of our six core values. The names of the students will be called at a public ceremony held in the Flamingo North classroom every Thursday. First the teacher will tell the class about what the lucky-ducky did to deserve this great honor, then disclose the name of the lucky-clucky-ducky. And if you don't clap for them, then you just didn't clap your hands. Probably they just hurt and that's ok. Ok looks like we are out of time so ROLL THE  CREDITS!

Explanation Of The Cube Party And How We Get It

By Hudson

The flamingos have a Cube Party coming. You might ask, what is a Cube Party? It depends on what the teachers decide. For example, last year we had a board game party for the Cube Party. So we never know what kind of Cube Party it will be. How the Flamingos earn a Cube Party is by filling up a bin with cubes. The way we earn cubes is by exemplifying the core values. The core values are Honor, Integrity, Compassion, Justice, Excellence and Citizenship. In conclusion, the Cube Parties are a privilege and fun.

Chess

Electives, an amazing thing to end off the weakened off, today I will be talking about one in particular the chess elective.  Chess is a game of many tactics and strategies. We are playing chess in electives. Featuring legends like Gary Kasparov and Bobby Fischer. along with amazing games like the immortal games, the Evergreen game and the Opera House game. Let me explain. Chess is over a thousand years old and known to be a very historical game. Starting off in the 6th century, the game is still played today. The oldest known version of Chess is chaturanga of India. As it stands, it has been changed many times now known as chess. Let me talk about those chess players. I just listed Gary Kasparov and Bobby Fischer. Gary Kasparov is a legendary chess player born on April 13th 1963 in the U.S.S.R. Later becoming a chess prodigy and the youngest chess world champion. Later, be the first chess champion to be defeated by a chess bot. Bobby Fischer, is one of the chess players I was talking about, was born On March 9th, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois. Then Bobby Fischer became the World chess champion in 1958. Chess is a wonderful game which all can enjoy.

Math Mystery

Math mystery is a math problem where you solve a mystery. There are many different math Mysteries like Jungle Joker where an animal in the jungle is pranking way too far. A Greek  mythology mystery where somebody steals an Immortal cape. St Patrick's Day mystery where a leprechaun forgot where his gold pot was. Divided dragons where a dragon is breaking a Alliance up. And Zombie elves where all of the elves in the North Pole are infected and are turned into zombies. These math Mysteries require you to do math and then write some words and Uncover Clues. For every math mystery you will have a list of suspects. There are some suspects in the math Mysteries.

Art Class: Cardboard Making (It's with Miss Pritchard)

By Abby

I hope y’all like art because art class is really fun, and that's what I'm going to talk about today. Flamingo North’s class with Miss Pritchard is really fun and we are currently doing cardboard making. Here are the instructions Miss Pichard gave us: Get a piece of scrap paper and make a draft of the animal you want to make, it can be a bird or a flamingo. Once you have made a draft of the animal you want to make, you have to get it approved by a teacher. Then you have to draw it out on a blank sheet of cardboard that you were given by a teacher. Make the shape out of the bird or the flamingo that you drew on your draft. After that you have to cut all the shapes to make sure they fit together and get it approved… again… Once you get it approved, lay out the pieces of your Flamingo or bird and then glue them on piece by piece. That's what I did at least. And I forgot to mention you have to paint your pieces in the colors that you want. You also have to put your name on every single piece so if one of your pieces gets separated from the rest, a teacher can give it to you. I did pink for my Flamingo and all black for my Flamingo’s eyeball. I mixed a white and pink for the neck to make it a pink but lighter pink. The results ended up really pretty, and I really liked it. If the pieces curl or start curving upward, you can get a big heavy book and put the book on top of the pieces that are curling so the book can straighten out the curled pieces. Once all your bird or Flamingo pieces were painted you could start gluing and then you would lay it out to dry. Last art class, which was on Tuesday, I finished it and glued it all together. Now, on Thursday, I will wait to see what the results ended up looking like. I hope y'all like art and continue doing it. Have a great day!

!Art Class!

By Tessa

Hi and welcome back to art News. In our class we find out the shocking news. This week is the last week of sketch class so next week both of the art classes will be joined again. Last class we found this out also in the last two classes we have also been allowed to do whatever sketch we want to sketch. I am currently doing a tunnel illusion. I don't know how I feel about this change. I really want to know what's going on in the other classes and I'm excited to do more than just sketching but I also love to do sketching and I still want to stay doing it. The artist we were learning from is called Rapid Fire Art and Make A Mark Studios. You can search them on Google and you can find them on YouTube.

That is all I have for today

And off of art news! :-) 🍄

Secret Squirrel: The Newest Fitness Game

Secret squirrel

Secret squirrel is a game we play in Mr. Keenan fitness class let me explain it. In this game you will need two to three jerseys and two to three bean bags. Today I'll be talking about the simple version. When someone chooses who the foxes (taggers) are going to be, the Foxes go to a different section of the area you're playing in, let's say the corner. Then when the foxes are in the corner the same person who chose the foxes is going to choose what two people are going to get the bean bags in this case called acorns. Also, the people who are not foxes are called squirrels hence the name. The foxes are going to be tagging the squirrels. Once they tag you, you open your hands showing if you're the player with the bean bag if you have the bean bag or not doesn't matter you're out. But if you have the bean bag you have to give it to the fox who tagged you. If the foxes get all the acorns they win. But there's a timer and when that timer runs out the foxes lose.

Secret squirrel

Secret squirrel is a fun game we do in outdoor fitness. Secret squirrel is so fun. If you want to know how to play here's how to play: There are 2 or 3 Taggers then you have The acorns or also known as bean bags. Mr Keenan picks people to hide the acorns. No one knows who has acorns. The other people pretend to have it and the Foxes try to figure out who has the bean bags. If they get both bean bags, then the foxes win. If the squirrels still have at least one bean bag before time runs out without the foxes getting them they win the game.

secret squares

By Nelson

The only reason I know about this top secret organization called The secret squirrels is because I have Insider knowledge. I will not disclaim who gave me this knowledge but anyway the organization keeps Holy nuts safe by hiding them so the foxes don't. The foxes want the holy nuts Because they're holy and Are really cool. Personally, I've only been the guarder of them for about two rounds. In all seriousness the game is played like this The foxes are chosen by Mr Keenan and then made faced away from the circle of squirrels And Mr Keenan chooses two squirrels to guard the sacred nuts I've only been chosen twice I've also been chosen for the tagger twice The other times I've just been a regular squirrel in round two of the game you can start passing around the nuts. Overall, this game is really really fun and I enjoy playing. Thank you to Mr Keenan for running Fitness thank you for reading.

Fitness: Secret Squirrels

 by Mati

In fitness we are playing a game called secret squirrels. Two people are called foxes. There are also squirrels. There are two special squirrels. Those two squirrels have a very important job. Their job is to guard the holy acorns by hiding their hands on their chest to cover the acorn. All the squirrels also cover their chest to confuse the foxes. When the foxes tag the squirrels they have to show if they have the acorn or not. If they don't have the acorn they're out. If they do then the foxes take the acorn and then they look for the other one. When the foxes find all the acorns they give them back to Mr. Keenan. When there's only 30 seconds left in the game they get a warning. If the squirrels hide the acorns for 30 seconds they win. If they don't, the foxes win. This is Mati signing out.

Secret Squirrels Level 1

By Dylan

In Fitness we are playing a game called secret squirrel and I'm going to explain how it works. So, basically there's a bunch of people that will run around in an area. Two of them will have acorns which can be bean bags or whatever you choose. However, there are also foxes that want to steal the acorns. If you get tagged by one fox, then you have to reveal if you have the acorn or not. If both squirrels holding acorns are found then the foxes win. If the squirrels keep at least one acorn in their possession before time runs out then the squirrels win. And last but not least, nobody may know who has the acorns who have the acorns, not even the other squirrels. I think that this is a very fun game. I hope you think so too.

THE WEEKLY ELECTIVE

                                         ISSUE NO. 2   BY EWAN

TODAY’S HEADLINE: READER’S THEATER CONTINUES FOR THIRD WEEK– STORMS, SPORTINESS AND A BIG, BAD MOUSE!

Welcome back to The Weekly Elective papers. Reader’s Theatre is now in its third week, and it’s getting wilder by the minute! We’re getting better at reading scripts, and although there are two scripts from the past week, there are a few new ones, too…

There was one called The Case of the Stolen Tablet, but I’m not sure what that one was about.

Next, The Three Little Elephants… ?! How are the elephants little?!? A play on the classic story “The Three Little Pigs”, the elephants build a straw hut, a house of sticks, and a giant brick mansion with personal butlers to save themselves from the Big Bad Mouse… ?! How can a mouse be big?!? And bad?!? Especially compared to elephants who build houses and brick mansions with personal butlers?!?

Never mind… on to the next and final story, which I don’t remember the name of but I’ll explain it to you superquick:

A boy (I don’t remember his name) and a girl (I don’t remember hers either) are staying with their grandparents over summer break. They’ve been playing video games for 4 hours straight, so the grandparents drive to the nearest pizza place for 3 hours (this is a rural setting, you know) and leave them with the kids down the road, Sloane (whiz at language) and Sporty (obsessed with sports and healthy food).

From a distance, Sporty would look to you like an oversized Buccaneers jersey. She wears numerous items of sports clothing, and you guessed it, she loves healthy food. She seems like the antidote to the laziness of the world, participating in numerous sport activities for half the day, and exercising the rest.

Sloane is a word genius, being the best in his English class and able to solve super hard riddles, stumping wordplay, and perplexing Havarti cheese. (Sorry. It’s right about lunchtime when I write this.) In fact, the girl in the story makes a bet: to answer 3 word problems. If he could, he would get to borrow one of their video game consoles for the rest of the trip. (Bad idea alert! For all I know, Sporty would throw it away.) If he couldn’t, the consoles stayed where they were.

After two strikes, the girl finally stumped Sloane with this riddle. Can you solve it?

Find the similarities between these sentences.

I did, did I?

Never odd or even.

Was it a cat I saw?

DON’T LOOK DOWN                      |

HERE IF YOU WANT TO SOLVE  |

IT ON YOUR OWN!                         \/

The answer was… they are palindromes!

Later that night the consoles go missing, and the kids suspect Sloane is to blame. But he’s not, and then you are left to solve it on your own.(The consoles are later returned.)

That’s it! Make sure to come back to this post every week for a new Weekly Elective!

Bye!

Math

Variables in Parentheses/Square Roots Divided by Square Roots

3/7/24

By Sam L.

In Math a while back, we were working on variables in parentheses. We would either simplify into parentheses or out of parentheses. It is easier to simplify out of parentheses than to simplify into parentheses. That is because of the acronym F.O.I.L. which stands for first, outer, inner, and last. Which means you times the front two numbers, then the outer numbers, then inner, and finally the last numbers. For example, you can have problems that look like (X-4)(X+3) which is the same as X²-X-12. I even made my own with a X on the outside and with an exponent X in one pair of parentheses. That is the main part of variables in parentheses.

Then you have the square roots divided by square roots. With this, if you have a number that does not have a square root, you can split it so you have fewer numbers. To do this, you reduce it to all its prime numbers and get the square roots of those numbers. Also, you can not have a square root on the bottom of the fraction. To change that, you can multiply both top and bottom by the rest of your square root. Then you simplify as much as possible to get it in the simplest form. Sometimes you even get a full number on the bottom without multiplying. It usually has small numbers on top and bottom, but you can get big numbers with no numbers that you can simplify out. One such number is 105, that is because its lowest numbers are 5, 7, and 3. All of which are prime numbers, making it impossible to simplify without going into decimals. That is all I have for you on Math.

Mathclass

I use to be in Ms Pritchard’s classroom for math class but now I'm upstairs with Mr. E. We do     fractions for math.  I use to be able to do fractions I would do them on an ipad at sylvan learning    center and I knew how to do fractions on a math mystery at school. Back to fractions upstairs.

The people in Mr E classroom first start with warm ups to get used to the fractions and then we do math sheets some days  and other days like today we do different math games and today    we made sticker sheets then played another game. We said  goodbye and left  to go to our other class writing. I’m new to Mr. E math class, so far I  like it. Well that's all for today

       Secret Squirrel

In fitness class we played a new game called “Secret Squirrel”. It’s a type of game that you  huddle up in a circle and Mr Keenan tells us to raise your hand if you want to be a fox which is the tagger, and if somebody wants to be the secret squirrel the teacher gives the acorns if somebody is acting like they want the acorns and also everybody has to close their eyes so that people can not know you have the acorns. Just like in the game Secret agent tag where people close their eyes, raise their hand  if they want to be a secret agent. Anyways when Mr Keenan tells us to open our eyes and act like you have the acorns, by hiding the acorns. But there’s a twist you can secretly give the acorns without anyone noticing that you gave the nuts. But moving on the foxes objective is to tag all the people that have the nuts, Unless if the squirrels win they have to avoid the foxes for a long time when the game ends. So there you have it folks. I hope you were concerned about this game and helped you understand it.
