COURSE DESCRIPTION (OKLAHOMA STATE STANDARDS)
- Reading and Literacy Skills in relation to Geography will be emphasized.
- Examine cultural and physical characteristics of the major regions of the Western Hemisphere.
- Look at the physical systems such as landforms and bodies of water; also learn about natural disasters.
- Think deeply about the human systems of the world (religion, traditions, language, social systems, and ethnicity).
- Analyze how humans interact with their environment in the Western Hemisphere.
COURSE OBJECTIVES (PPOOL)
- Build a strong comprehension of general geographical concepts and Western Geography in EVERY student.
- Create and facilitate a classroom environment in which critical thinking and analysis is used in regards to Geography.
- Expand knowledge about the world around you and broaden students’ perspectives on Western cultures.
- Be able to successfully navigate the Western Hemisphere using the tools and skills of a Geographer.
CURRICULUM TIMELINE (Timeline is subject to change at teacher’s discretion)
First Quarter: Classroom Procedures, Basic Geography Skills, Map Reading, Latitude and Longitude, Land and Water Features, Weather/Climate, Natural Resources, Culture
Second Quarter: United States and Canada
Third Quarter: Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean
Fourth Quarter: South America
GRADING
Every student begins this class with a 100%. It is up to the STUDENT whether or not it stays that way based on the following factors:
- Participation/Paying Attention
- Daily Work/Homework
- Current Events Journal
- Projects
- Quizzes
- Tests
*Late Work: Accepted at any point in the same semester. The later the work, the lower the grade.
GRADING SCALE
A – 90-100%
B – 80-89%
C – 70-79%
D – 60-69%
F – 59% or below

- Cultural Attire (1 per quarter)
- Movie Review (1 per semester, must be pre-approved)
