National Phys. Ed. & Sports/Trans Athlete Awareness Week

May 1 to 7

What is National Phys. Ed. & Sports/Trans Athlete Awareness Week?

Physical education and athletics are integral parts of the K-12 school experience, but they can be rendered inaccessible or distressful for students. Many transgender students (transgender describes students whose gender identity does not correlate with their sex assigned at birth), like their cisgender peers (cisgender describes a person whose gender identity is the same as the sex they were assigned at birth), enjoy participation in physical education classes or athletic competition and it is the responsibility of school leaders to create inclusive policies and practices that enable all students to benefit from and enjoy the same experience in these activities.

The purpose of National Phys. Ed. and Sports/Trans Athlete awareness month is to bring awareness to educators, parents and students. It is meant to alert us to a pivotal challenge of providing inclusivity in sports wherever possible and eliminating unnecessary gendered practices that may bar transgender athletes from competing with their peers. We, as a community, must be open to this challenge if we are to create educational institutions that value and meet the needs of all students, including those who identify as transgender.

Harvey Milk Day

May 22

What is Harvey Milk Day

Harvey Milk Day is a day to educate your school about an extraordinary leader whose courageous work to end discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in the 1970s set the stage for many of the civil rights advances we see today.

Harvey Bernard Milk was an American politician and the first openly gay elected official in the history of California, where he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. His rise to political office came in the 1970s when homophobia and police of gender and sexuality was at an all time high. Harvey Milk was assassinated in November 1978, along with Mayor George Moscone, by former City Supervisor Dan White.
