Welcome to the STEM Department!

We believe that STEM is the integration of of the four fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) that is supported and enriched by literacy & inquiry. All students K-12 will be exposed to hands on activities, College & Career pathways, and real-world application explored through STEM projects & experiences. In order to do this work we are creating partnerships with outside organizations and businesses to bring the STEM world into the classroom and student learning outside into the community. As a department, we will support teachers, school leaders, parents, and community members to develop opportunities to engage in STEM projects and experiences. We provide professional development to support teachers, leaders, and partners in developing equitable and accessible STEM programming and learning in the classroom.

BPS STEM Vision, Missions, & Goals

Vision:

Boston Public Schools provides joyful, accessible & equitable STEM opportunities for students to become agents of their learning which can prepare them to be culturally agile and adapt to the changing world around them.

The STEM Mission:

Boston Public Schools Will:

  • Ensure all BPS students will experience interdisciplinary & inquiry-based learning that is culturally relevant, hands-on, engaging, and enhanced by communication, literacy and collaboration. These experiences will support the demand for graduates to be skilled in the executive functioning and critical thinking skills required by the STEM professions. Students will be inspired , motivated and confident in pursuing STEM careers. The skill set students develop will not only serve them in STEM careers, is it applicable to many fields and careers they may choose for themselves.

  • Support educators and staff to create educational workspaces that value student voice, story, identity, and culture. Educators and staff will plan high quality STEM instruction that allows students to apply MA content standards through inquiry-based learning. These experiences will develop our students’ abilities to solve complex questions about current and relevant STEM topics, thereby closing opportunity and achievement gaps and building a pipeline for underrepresented individuals, including Black, LatinX, and females, to become the STEM workers of the future.

  • Support families in understanding what STEM is and how it fits into today’s society and workforce. We will work to ensure that families and their students have equitable access to STEM learning within the school day and have opportunities to apply that knowledge through outside programming, jobs, camps, and internships. BPS will support students in developing their STEM identity and connecting them to the proper resources that will further their exploration of STEM and STEM careers and majors.

Goals:

  1. To create students that can think critically and apply STEM content/phenomena to the world around them.

  2. Bring STEM learning to life and outside the walls of the classroom.

  3. Provide equitable access and opportunities to STEM careers and pathways of the future.
