My favorite third grade project of all time was our artifact boxes, a collaborative project with Megan Wilson, our school libarian. Students selected and researched various countries then created artifact boxes to represent their countries. From there we took a 360 picture and turned them into ThingLink images. The amazing part was when we put the ThingLinks into ClassVR googles and let the kids explore. Wow! Such engagement! (Click here to see pictures of the project as they created it.)
Write Your Own Math Quiz
Students in created their own math facts quiz but then we took it to a whole new tech level. They had to create the quiz in Scratch then build a console to take the quiz with a Makey Makey so the quiz taker never had to touch the computer or Makey Makey. The highlight was when they had their classmates take the quizzes.
Physics in 3rd Grade?
We love Cubelets at Yealey, and I have developed a partnership with Emily Eissenberg, the VP of People Operations at Modular Robotics. She helped me write this math challenge. Students learn how to use blockly coding to code their robots to go as fast as possible. Then they have to measure the distance the robot traveled and determine the speed of the robot. This project taught kids basic robotics, coding, physics, and using fractions in division. My principal happened to be subbing for me one day when the kids were working on this and could not believe we were doing physics in 3rd grade!
