In the fall of the 2021-22 school year, I was given a 1st grade core extension class of the top readers in the grade. Starting in January 2022, the kids created their own stories. They had to learn Scratch Jr first. Then they handwrote the story to fit what they could do in Scratch Jr, coded it into Scratch Jr, and typed it up on a Google Doc. Enjoy this video of them sharing their stories with the class.
In January 2020, I teamed up with Kathy Kohake and her 1st grade core extension class on a digital storytelling adventure. The students were challenged to write their own original stories then code them into Scratch Jr. This project took longer than expected, but we have enjoyed using Scratch Jr to explore story elements like character and setting.
Along the way, we talked about story webs and worked on various challenges to learn how to use all the features of the app. Students even learned how to make a seed grow on screen to match with science standards.
Here is a video of some of the students sharing their digital stories with the class.
