Class overview
Spanish 304 is a broad, introductory course for students wishing to concentrate in Hispanic cultures and literatures, and for those students who will be teaching Spanish at any level. This course presents a broad historical overview of Peninsular and Latin American literature from its origins to the present with particular emphasis on literary terminology and movements.
Furthermore, we will explore the social and historical context of Spain and Latin America in order to gain a better understanding of the linkage between culture and literature.
Taught in Spanish.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
Identify and discuss periods and movements in significant Hispanic literary works.
Acquire the appropriate terminology in order to analyze literary texts in Spanish.
Evaluate and reflect on cultural perspectives in Hispanic culture(s) through a variety of authentic texts.
Practice presentational, formal Spanish in writing and speaking.
Learn about and demonstrate digital fluency in tandem with Spanish language proficiency.
COURSE ORGANIZATION
Learn about the characteristics of the main literary genres in Spanish (poesía, narrativa y teatro). Acquire the necessary literary vocabulary to describe and debate literary issues regarding Peninsular and Latin American literature.
A panoramic view of some of the most important writers in the Hispanic world. Focus on topics such as love, death, family, fantasy vs. reality, etc.
A selection of poets and poems from different times and regions but sharing universal feelings and thoughts.
Read and learn about some of the more important plays in Spanish, with a great recognition by critics and public.
