Fire Drills/Evacuation
Each teacher is instructed by written material how their class must exit the building during a fire drill or evacuation. The City School District with concurrence of the Fire Department is required to have 8 fire drills during the fall semester and 4 during the spring semester. In addition, East Middle practices a full evacuation early in the fall semester. Fire drills and evacuations are planned by the Principal so that each student has previous experience of exiting from each classroom situation prior to an actual emergency. It is every teacher’s responsibility to inform pupils concerning fire drill/evacuation regulations and directions.
Handicap Students/Students with elevator passes should proceed to the stairwell nearest the elevator where they will be met and evacuated by trained members of the staff.
Our two main evacuation sites are Alumni Stadium and Grace Baptist Church. Specific procedures for both locations are in our building safety plan. All staff must be familiar with procedures and understand their responsibilities in case of an evacuation.
