Tabaco Campus Library History
The Bicol University Tabaco Campus (BUTC) Library is a unit of Bicol University Library System (BULS) whose present status is a product of historical metamorphosis. Established in 1949 by Republic Act No. 412, this school library was born as the then Bicol School of Fisheries (BSF) offering a secondary fishery curriculum and Ms. Emilia Balunsay and Ms. Norlinda Laud as its first teacher/librarian. Its operation began in 1953 in a rented private building at Cormidal, Tabaco, Albay.
In 1962, the school acquired its own campus at Tayhi, Tabaco, Albay. In 1969 the school was integrated into the Bicol University organization by virtue of Republic Act 5521, and subsequently became the Bicol University College of Fisheries (BUCF) and formally offered its academic program, a three (3) years Technical Course in Fisheries and a four (4) year degree in Bachelor of Science in Fisheries majors in Marine Fisheries, Inland Fisheries, and Fish Processing Technologies. The library building of BUCF was shared with two classrooms, which was later named as the Social Hall and consequently named Dean Geronimo Lavilla Hall in honor of former Dean Geronimo Lavilla. Ms. Norlinda Laud was the librarian after Ms. Balunsay retired and Ms. Joy Ballesteros was the assistant.
In 1983 after the completion of the buildings funded by the World Bank, which is an educational loan granted to Bicol University College of Fisheries, the library transferred to its new building which has a unique design (hexagon). After a few years Ms. Laud retired and Ms. Ballesteros became the College Librarian (Head Librarian).
In November 1994 the Board of Regents (BOR) of Bicol University, through its Resolution No. 28, series of 1994, the Bicol University College of Fisheries became Bicol University Tabaco Campus, allowing the campus to offer other courses such as BS Fisheries; BS Social Work; BS Nursing; BS Food Technology; BS in Entrepreneurship; and BS Education, MS Fisheries was later offered by the campus as the only university in the Bicol Region that offered such. Also Cong. Edcel Lagman, 1st District Congressman of Albay filled a resolution in the House of Representative changing the name of BUCF to BUTC.
Through the years the BUTC Library supports the flagship program of the campus when it was recognized by CHED as Center of Excellence through its CHED Memo No. 06, s. 2000. And just a few years back, it was recognized by CHED as Center of Development, and just last year (2018) the program was subjected to LEVEL IV accreditation by AACCUP through the stewardship of Mr. Stephanie Granatin as the new college librarian replacing the retired Ms. Joy Ballesteros.
