Vision of the Graduate -Global Competencies

Global Competencies

We know that in the age of information and the shift to a global economy, students who graduate from the Bethel Public Schools are going to need to demonstrate skills and knowledge, which prepare them for college and/or career readiness. In the literature, these skills are sometimes referred to as 21st Century Skills, which we are now referring to as global competencies. We expect that students who graduate from the Bethel Public Schools be proficient in all skill areas.

The committee, made up of 35 teachers and administrators, determined the key global competencies we would focus on: Collaboration, Creativity and Innovation and Critical Thinking. We also felt that it was critical to develop a common definition of each competency, key skills embedded within the competency and define “what it looks like” when a student is demonstrating those skills in the form of rubrics.

By using these rubrics (below), Pre-K through grade 12, it will help to develop a common understanding among our staff, students, and parents. The Bethel Public Schools will embed these rubrics into the curriculum as they align to the academic tasks within units. By using the rubrics at all grade levels, students will have multiple, sustained experiences throughout their schooling. We will work towards creating systems of reporting student progress on the Global Competencies.

Definition of Performance Levels

Level 1 - Emerging: Student performance is consistently below course level expectations even while receiving support.

Level 2 - Developing: Student performance is beginning to and occasionally does meet course level expectations or student requires support to meet course level expectations.

Level 3 - Proficient: Student Performance is consistently at course level expectations as evidenced by independent application of concepts and skills.

Level 4 - Exemplary: Student performance is consistently at or above course level expectations as evidenced by demonstration of an in-depth understanding and sophisticated application of concepts and skills.
