Workshop

The workshop is available to Faculty of Architecture and Design students who have completed their Workshop Safety training. This training ensures that all users are familiar with operational guidelines and safety protocols, which are essential for maintaining a secure working environment.

You can find up to date opening hours in the Campus Important Information file within our MS Teams Bulletin Board. There will always be workshop staff and/or student assistants on hand during the workshop opening hours and you can get advice on projects or help with using the machines.

After completing the induction course, students can book a time slot to use the workshop facilities. The booking form can be accessed online. The workshop is open only to students during posted hours, which are regularly updated on the **Campus Information Board**, and important information is shared within the **BI Workshop MS Teams**. During these hours, workshop staff and student assistants are available to provide supervision, guidance, and assistance.

The Workshop is equipped with a variety of tools and machinery, including:

•  Woodworking and Metalworking Machines

•  3D Printers

•  Laser Cutter

•  Paint Workshop

•  Photo Studio

•  Plotter for Poster Printing (available for a small fee)

Designated shared-use areas provide free materials, with additional resources such as 3D printing filaments and spray paints also available. 

Please note: Some machines require prior reservations and may only be operated under supervision.

For the safety of all users, strict adherence to workshop safety rules is mandatory. Violations may result in suspension from the workshop. The key safety guidelines below can also be found in MS Teams in the Faculty of Architecture and Design folder. By adhering to these guidelines, students ensure a safe, efficient, and productive experience within the Workshop. If you have any questions or need assistance, the workshop staff are always available to help.

1. Mandatory Safety Induction: All workshop users must complete the workshop induction course.

2. Booking Requirement: Students must book their time slot online before using the workshop.

3. Supervision and Guidance: Machines and electrical tools may only be operated under the direct supervision or authority of workshop staff.

4. Training: General and taskspecific training is required before using any workshop facility or machinery.

5. Buddy System: At least two people must be present in the workshop while working.

6. Safety Equipment: Ensure that safety equipment is in place before operating machinery. Safety devices should not be removed or altered, except under the supervision of technical staff.

7. Ventilation: Ensure extraction and ventilation systems are functioning properly to prevent air contamination and material blockages.

8. Reporting Defects: Report any equipment malfunctions or defects to workshop staff immediately. Machines should be shut down if a fault occurs.

9. Personal Safety Gear: Safety equipment such as goggles, gloves, and ear protection is provided and must be used. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory.

10. Dress Code: Long hair, loose clothing, scarves, and jewelry must be secured to avoid entanglement in machines.

11. Work Caution: Stay alert at all times. Think ahead and be cautious throughout the entire work process to prevent accidents.

12. Tool Usage: Use tools only for their intended purposes and ensure they are in good condition. Do not use damaged or malfunctioning tools.

13. Material Respect: Handle materials, tools, and machines with care. Users are liable for any damages caused by improper handling.

14. Machine Shutdown: Turn off machines when not in use and disconnect them when changing tools.

15. Tool Replacement: Return tools and equipment to their designated places after use.

16. Cleanliness: Maintain cleanliness in the workshop. Clean the machines and work area immediately after use.

17. Personal Items: Store personal materials on designated shelves and label them using the provided storage forms. Unidentified items will be discarded.

18. Floor Safety: Avoid storing items on the floor to prevent tripping hazards.

19. Cables: Keep electrical cables off the floor and out of circulation paths. Disconnect appliances when not in use.

20. Tool Placement: Never leave tools on machine beds while machines are running.

21. Chemical Safety: Avoid skin contact with oils and solvents by using gloves and cleaning wipes when necessary.

22. No Food or Drinks: Eating and drinking are prohibited in the workshop areas.

23. Tool Borrowing: Workshop tools must remain within the workshop unless special permission is granted by the workshop manager.

24. Pregnancy Restrictions: It is prohibited to work in the workshop during pregnancy.

25. Consequences of Noncompliance: Failure to follow safety rules may result in exclusion from the workshop.
