Preparation of thyme leaves for methanol extraction.
Weigh ~1g of dry thyme leaves (record the actual mass in your lab notebook).*
Crush the thyme leaves in a mortar with a pestle.
Weigh a clean and dry 50 mL beaker and record the mass in your lab notebook.*
Transfer the crushed thyme leaves to the beaker, reweigh, and record the mass in your lab notebook.*
Get 35-40 mL of methanol from the fumehood in a graduated cylinder.
*Sample mass values will be provide with your data
Add 10 mL of methanol to the crushed thyme leaves in the 50 mL beaker.
Add a 1-inch stir bar into the beaker, cover it with foil, and place it on the stir plate. Let the sample stir gently for at least 10 minutes.
After stirring, let the sample settle into two layers (thyme and extract). Remove the layer of extract using a plastic dropper and transfer it into a clean beaker.
Repeat steps 1 - 3 two more times. For each repeat, use the crushed leaves left in the beaker from the previous extraction, and transfer the resulting extract to the same beaker.
