Extraction from Thyme Leaves: Thin Layer Chromatography and High Performance Liquid Chromatography

Note to instructors

Students should be assigned to one mobile phase (100% Heptane, 25/75 EtOAC/heptane, 50/50 EtOAC/heptane, or 75/25 EtOAC/heptane), one extraction solvent (water, methanol, 100% heptane, or 25/75 EtOAC/heptane). Be sure to make time to have a group discussion to review the results from the TLC analyses (parts II and III) as students will need to see the class data to answer their post lab questions. All TLC data is provided in this PDF, but might be difficult to parse without instructor guidance. You will also need to assign students to one of six groups (A–F) for the HPLC analysis portion of the experiment.
