2023-2024 MEC Swimming Schedule

Coach Nina McPherson

Coach McPherson is entering her 2nd season as the Cougar swim coach.

A former long-time competitor swimmer, lifeguard and swim instructor, McPherson has always had a passion for introducing young people to a sport that she loves.

McPherson grew up in New Hartford, New York, and graduated from Ithaca College. She moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1994. Her family lived in Brunswick County full time from 2005-2011, then moved to Waxhaw, North Carolina, and only spent summers at the beach. In 2014, McPherson founded and coached the Millbridge Marlins, a summer team in the Greater Charlotte Swim League that has been undefeated since June 2016. That same year, McPherson began coaching at Cuthbertson Middle School, and later became the head swim coach of the Cuthbertson High School team. While at Cuthbertson High School she was named the Southern Carolina Conference Coach of the Year in 2018. In 2020 McPherson moved back to Brunswick County permanently and the following year became the head coach of the Cougars swim team.

McPherson is married to her husband Tim. Together they have three children - Troy (21), Alana (19), and Brooke (12) and two English Labradors, Boomer and Bear.

Troy and Alana both attend UNCW, while Brooke is at Cedar Grove Middle School and is a proud member of the Brunswick Aquatic Club Gators swim team and the Southport-Oak Island Marlins summer swim team.

When asked about having the opportunity to coach her three children and at South McPherson said "Being a swim coach for all three of my children has been one of the greatest joys in my life! I’ve been a stay-at-home mom for the past 19 years, but my coaching jobs have allowed me to continue being a part of this amazing sport and to positively impact the lives of all the young people on my various teams!! I’ve been blessed to be able to continue coaching here at SBHS - I love this team and these families!!!!"
