Staying Connected This Spring

By Bethany Roberts, SES SLMC

Here at Southport Elementary Media Center we have had so many fun things happening within our media classes these past couple of months! Our first grade students and kindergarten classes used Ozobots to learn simple coding while learning about connections we have with those who matter most to use through reading "The Invisible String" by Patrice Karst.

Our second and third grade classes practiced research skills by researching a US President. They used the facts that were found from resources to create a presidential bookmark or flap book. Through this project, they learned the importance of using reliable sources and how to credit sources with citations.

Our students have even gotten to participate in self-selected library learning stations where they can have a choice of playing with learning blocks, board games, puzzles, chess/checkers, or drawing/coloring. Students look forward to getting this time to interact with their peers while also taking turns browsing the library collection for a new book each week!

Finally, our Battle of the Books team competed at the county competition on March 19th. Our team worked super hard to read the stories and practice answering the questions about each book. We were honored to get to battle alongside all of the fabulous elementary teams during the competition! We are looking forward to next year's battle!
