With the rapid emergence of new technologies, the BCS Digital Learning and School Library Services Department recognizes the significance of artificial intelligence (AI) resources, understanding their value and use in the world of education and beyond. However, with the rapidly changing world of AI, there is a constant need to review resources. It is our goal to ensure responsible and ethical use, setting clear expectations for users that align practices with all established district policy including the citing of resources used for the creation of classroom-related products.

The roles and responsibilities of the district remain consistent with already established procedures in regard to Technology in the Educational Program (Policy 3220), Technology Responsible Use (Policy 3225), and other applicable policies, including those that address integrity and copyright (Policy 4310). Student information protection requires vigilance to abide by requirements from NCDPI and the North Carolina General Assembly.

Terms of use and privacy policies must be reviewed before using any application or digital resource in Brunswick County Schools.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why doesn't BCS use AI Detector Apps/Software?

Detecting AI writing is challenging because generative AI continues to evolve quickly. AI Detectors have incorrectly labeled human written text as being from AI. Due to the unreliable nature of current AI Detectors, BCS does not recommend using detector applications at this time.

What are some of the challenges associated with generative AI use?

The use of AI resources requires an understanding of what information the tool collects! Always be aware of the resource's privacy policy and terms of service. The majority of generative AI resources are not permitted for use by those under the age of 13. You should also never share personal information!

For example, ChatGPT requires parent permission for users between the ages of 13 and 18.

Is there a proper way to cite the output of AI tools?

Please see the guide linked below when citing AI tools.

How can I request student use of a generative AI resource that requires student log-in or paid access?

Teachers in Brunswick County Schools: If you would like students to use a generative AI resource that requires student login, please submit your request on our Request for Digital Resource Review Form associated with our Ask Before You App Campaign. If you would like to use an AI resource that requires a paid subscription, please speak with your administrator!
